A dark gray would work but I think it will depend on your kitchen lighting and for that we need pictures of the kitchen

There is Wordly Gray is appealing good. I like Pewter Cast too. Just pick up any color from your countertop.

How about a really dark green?

Pick one of the lightest colors from your countertop.

Personally prefer the Pewter Cast.

Add something eye catching to your kitchen -- something you truly like in your favorite bold bright color -- to make your countertop less of a focal point. It doesn't need to be a painted wall or even a permanent item. A sun catcher on the window is worth considering. You might add a candy/cookie jar or decorative bowl visible behind a glass door of a cabinet or on an open wall shelf or even atop the fridge.

If you have no glass doors on any of your overhead cabinets, you might consider taking one door or pair of doors to a local cabinet maker and seeing if a glass insert could be added. Then you could paint the interior of that cabinet visible thru the glass doors in your favorite color without regard to the colors in the countertop.

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of doing a grey and the BM dark greens that were suggested are also very appealing. Originally I was thinking of doing a Stonington Gray by BM but that may be too light and would emphasize the counter top, which I want to avoid. Pewter Cast is a nice choice, and darker than Stonginton. If we go dark on the cabinets I am thinking of removing some of the uppers and doing open shelving because we have the space and the kitchen has enough storage otherwise. Walls are currently Chantilly Lace.
