Paint and floor are too matchy - help!

last modified: 6 years ago

Our ugly walls (Decatur Buff or Twilight Gold) are too matchy with our yellowish oak floor.

Can anyone suggest a paint color that works with the existing floor and black/tan carpet runner as neither can be changed right now.

Hubs does not want any white or cream. Help!

once you eliminate white or cream, you're into colors, and we'd need to see a lot more than the flooring!

@acm there isn't much else to show. This is the entryway; the kitchen cabinets are the same as the floor and countertops are black like the carpet. We have no other colors in the fixtures.

Edgecomb Gray is really nice too- a little softer and warmer than Revere Pewter. We have it in much of our first floor.

I don't actually mind the color combination going on right now. You can break up the expanse of tan with a runner or other rug and well-placed accessories.

@mnmamax3 thanks! Its a lot darker than the first photo shows. I will try to add another photo-the floor and wall are almost exactly the same. I have two small kids so runners and rugs won’t work.

this entry doesn't connect to any adjacent rooms with, you know, furniture?

I vote for Revere Pewter. Good neutral. My old house had more “goldy “ colors as well. When I built, I now have BM Pashmina throughout. Really like it...a greige along the lines of Revere Pewter but it’s a lot of color. Need to have enough light for it.

Try a sage green - that usually looks good with all tones of wood...

Just don't panic! Get samples - paint them out onto poster board and hang them in several locations throughout the space so you can see it during different times of the day..

    Good luck!

Ahhh.. I get it now. I should have looked up the color. #JustGotRidofMySpiceGold. I found an in-home color consult very helpful. The one I did was with Sherwin Williams and after the gift cards and free color samples they give you the actual cost was only like $40-50. The one mistake I DID make was not getting the new color on a bunch of walls before freaking out. That tan is a bossy color and made the colors we picked with the consultant look horribly purple. I tried seriously like 50 shades of gray and by the time I was done there was enough grey on the walls that the first color we picked (SW - Elephant Ear) was just perfect.

If you select a sage green the floor will appear more orange. Not a good look IMO.

@BeverlyFLADeziner i agree. I don’t want to draw any attention to the floor! I looked at a couple of mushroomy colors today that were too dark, but seemed to be a good tone. Paint is hard!

Beverly is absolutely right. Having used Revere Pewter in 3 homes what makes it the top choice when staging homes for sale is it is a chameleon color that uniquely complements the color it surrounds. Try it.

Paint IS hard. Ive looked all over Pinterest for various color ideas and learned that some have a different tone of color in them. Some greens, some blues, etc. Also that other colors in that room can bring out colors in the paint too. Looking on Pinterest is a bit tricky too as what you see isn’t always what it is. I found a color I thought was pretty, turns out it’s more of a light green (it looked much darker and a blue online...Copen Blue). My first pick was Revere Pewter, but I’m slowly deciding against it. Ive seen that Colonnade Gray is a comparable color. I’ve got three colors I’m deciding on right now for my walls. I’m leaning more to that middle one. It sure is a tough process.

Rhinestone, Gossamer Veil and Revere Pewter. Wall in Kitchen is first pict. Wall in bedroom is second. Definitely depends on location and lighting. In the kitchen the first color looks white to me, bedroom looks gray.

Can also get excellent peel-and-stick oversized samples at samplize.com I bought numerous samples of SW and BM colors and it was great to move the pieces around the rooms to see in different lights.

From experience-try what Debbie said or get the sticky ones. To me, the middle one looks very minty. I’d still do the Revere Pewter.

Need to see from farther back- not just comparing one to the other.

It's so hard to see the true color on a tan wall. TRUST me on this. Since you already have the samples on the wall, tape white copy paper all around and in between, then make some paper "covers" for each color so you can view independently. A picture farther back helps though what we see might not be what you see. Once you pick the possible (it) color, run it to the edge of some of your trim and the floor to really get a good idea (or put on the pasteboards as suggested). I think the revere has a depth that the others don't. Consider your lighting too. Most of us have warm lighting (2700K) which brings a golden tone to everything. Colors will show truer in the 3500-4000K range.

I think I am so tired of white gray beige and greige!

    Everyones houses look the same-

Find the color that goes best with your furnishings and something that will make you happy... even if it's purple! lol

@Debbi Washburn yes! I feel like the same 4 or 5 colors are super popular right now. And the local designer I consulted kept suggesting colors “that buyers love”. I want what looks good - we aren’t selling, but even if we were, I think many buyers repaint anyway.
