We need better picture right now I would say it looks like a dark hole why all the dark colors and furniture ? What is the primary use of the space ?What are you wanting when you say decorating? I think you need a lot more lighting so end tables with lamps a coffee table would be a start.

The first things you need is lighter paint and additional lighting....the room appears to be a cave of darkness....brown on brown on khaki on brown. The photo, taken during daylight hours, shows how little natural light you get. If you need darkness for anything, consider room-darkening shades for temporary darkness. A game room needs at least one well-lit table game area and a comfortable seating arrangement for TV-watching and personal device play. You have a large comfy sectional. Perhaps the people sitting there might enjoy having footstools for their feet. I’m sure the family has snacks in the room, so small tables for drinks would be handy. Floor lamps may help reduce the gloom...two or three floor lamps. Add some posters on the walls to bring in color. A lighter wall color would be a simple way to begin to brighten the room.

I agree to lighten the room with a lighter color and curtains. Then you will have a nice backdrop for your sofa, lamps and tables as recommended above.

it is dark in that room. not sure why it is so dark when i had all 6 overhead lights on!!! i'll look around to see if i have some lamps or curtains i can put in there temporarily to get a feel for how it transforms the space. i'll keep you updated with pics. what color paint do you recommend?

I would make this room more inviting, lighter. Get light curtains and keep open the windows more by widening rods. Add some extra lamps, side table or floor ones. I added ottoman and decor. Ohhhhhh and yes, center TV in wall.

In proportion to the size of your room, I would recommend a larger screen and longer cabinet or shelf mounted below. You have room for a linear fireplace if that is of any interest to you for this room.

Consider using IKEA Besta Modular unit to accomplish this.

I would concentrate on the TV wall to start. You media cabinet is way too short and there is nothing on that great big wall to look at but the TV.

If you are keeping the carpet, its color must be considered when selecting wall and ceiling paint. Because of the lack of natural light (it may improve later in the day, but the photo was taken in the morning), I would probably go with a white....not a stark white....or another pale color which may reflect a little bit of light.

Simple way to hang shelves on the wall

Definitely concentrate your efforts on the TV wall. I would do a version of the 4th pic Beverly posted. Long glossy white at bottom, darker to 'disappear' TV on top with narrow ledges/shelves that blend into wall. Ledges with minimal stuff on them. If you are fond of the current wall color, stick with that. You need to add dimension and presence on that wall to harmonize with your large sectional.

Paint. Get rid of the heavy drapes. Longer media cabinet and art on the wall.

thank you for all of the help!!! some things aren't going to change in the room (for now husband wants to keep the antique desk the tv is on and we aren't going to buy a bigger tv. it's actually huge) but somethings we can change (paint color, wall decor, lamps, curtains- and i really appreciate your help with these things).

Ok, I moved the tv more toward the center. i brought in a plant we had in another room. i brought in a brass tripod lamp. i removed the curtains and put on 1 panel just to check it out. what do u think of it? should i get all 4 panels? the curtain definitely helps to add more light! but what do u think of the pattern on it? we will definitely change the paint color to be lighter in the future. not sure why the pictures are so dark. must be my phone in panorama mode? i posted a single shot and it is brighter/more accurate.

wow! thanks so much for the pictures! it is so hard for me to visualize things without seeing them! that longer console does look so much nicer than the desk. we recently moved some other things around so we may have an alternative spot for that desk after all! i'll keep you posted!
