Front door paint color

Please help me figure out what color to paint our front door. The current green is fine, but really not my style. I like black, but after living in a house with a black door that turned boiling hot from the southern afternoon sun, I vowed never again. Attached is a photo of the color I would love to paint. My apprehension is I LOVE fall and Christmas/winter and feel like the light summery door may contrast my fun in decorating for those seasons. What do you think?

Personally I would paint it and the storm door white. I think the color you chose is too light and will give the same look you have now. Not every house has to have a colored door.

Painting a door is an afternoon's work. Try the blue and see how it feels -- you could always switch it later to something more in the traditional feel of the house like some shade of red.

It's a pretty color but fits better with the lighter/softer brick to me. Black would look great and is classic with brick and white trim. However, I understand your reason for not wanting it. Are you against just using white for the door?

ETA - Another thought would be a darker green but I'd want it for the shutters, too. This is Benjamin Moore's Tarrytown Green with brick and white trim.

Hmmm....on second thought, the darker green door could be another heat issue.

My husband wants red. Other houses in the neighborhood have red doors (they have different brick) and I don’t love it. What shade of red would be right this brick? I am clueless.

I'm just not a fan of red with brick in most cases. Hopefully others here will have some suggestions. I'd want a red that doesn't clash with the rust tones in your brick. You can take a closeup of your brick and upload it to Sherwin Wms' site. It will "read" your brick and offer paint color suggestions. Just something to try.

Love that black door from Beverly. If black is not an option, would you (and hubby) object to white? Your brick, black shutters and white door and trim would be very nice. It would also solve your Fall and Christmas decor issue.

    This combination is classic.

I really love the black and it’s my top choice aesthetically but just not practical. Our last door was so hot it burnt my kids going in and out.

What do you all think of a grey green like this?

I realize that green grey is a very subtle change compared to what we currently have. Another house in our neighborhood has a grey door I think looks great but my husband isn’t as sold on.

    I'd rather have white.

That door on the other house looks kind of blah to me. It needs to be black...or white. :-)

You have strong contrast with the black and white trim, so any color lighter than your current green is going to look washed out. I think you need to choose between white, black, or deeper greens. If you want a red door, it needs to be a very dark brownish red. Black would look best with all your white trim. Maybe you wouldn't have the same issues with the heat on this house that you did on your last, especially with the glass storm door.

I think you are trying to pick too light of colors for your house. If you are set against trying black, then maybe try a darker shade of teal. Remember it is only paint, and you can always repaint it. I dont like the green on there (which looks more yellow to me). It does nothing for the house. I also like the idea of a darker red.

Match the brick for the paint color for the door and consider removing the shutters which are not sized correctly for your Georgian house.

    Not every Georgian has shutters

Take a look at Sherwin Williams app. They give you the ability to try different colors on your project. Hope this helps.

Judging by my monitor your second example looks better. However, monitors can be very iffy. I still think white would be a better choice than the shade of red you need to work with the brick.

Casco Industries suggested Sherwin Wms which is what I mentioned before. Beverly included it for one of her examples, too.

Good news is, as someone already mentioned, it's only paint on just a door. Not that big of a deal to change.

ETA - The Rockwood Terracotta from Beverly looks like a good blend. I'd still rather have white than an orange-red door.

Both of those reds look a little pink. I think you need more rust/brown red if you decide to go with red. Maybe SW Fired Brick?

So the SW app is what helped me select these colors from our brick and try them on. Everything comes up somewhat pink in the afternoon sun. The true reds come out completely pink. Fired Brick came up too orange for me.

I had a white door on my last brick home and really didn’t like it. Too bland for me. I know this white isn’t the right white but just to give a quick idea. I just don’t think it does anything for the house.

I think from farther back, Crabby Apple lends a nice warmth too

Cassidy, we can only judge from monitor screens which can be hard. You're there in person and can see much more. Also, it's your house so you can pick whatever looks right to YOU. Maybe try the Crabby Apple and see.

The photo above looks good - darker than the first visualizer. You should be able to tell from the chip sample in person.

Cassidy, it looks good...perfect for Fall! Go get some pumpkins! ;-)

Door color looks great! For a more welcoming and safer entryway I would keep the stairs clear and put one larger black pot in each corner of your landing instead.

I agree fewer pots would be best, and black is a good suggestion from calidesign.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>I am a flower enthusiast

I am a flower enthusiast and almost done with these blooms before I transition to mums, at which point I will take your advice and limit to two at the entry. Unless I find cost effective plastic black planters, I can’t justify the expense of new ones so I will likely repurpose with planters I have (they’re not cheap!). Appreciate the feedback! This is just the only place that gets good sun for growth so all my potted flowers have been thriving here.

Okay I followed your advice! What do you think?

Perfect! It is a beautiful, welcoming entryway! When you need to replace your outdoor mat, get one that fits the whole length of the doorway.

Oh, it looks great!!! I just love seeing all the brick. Yes, a larger door mat will be perfect. We also have a nice brick walkway, steps and porch. Keeping things simple makes such a difference IMO. Nice work, Cassidy!

calidesign, kudos for suggesting clearing the steps and using the black planters. :-)

Paint the storm door the same color.
