Help me decide on kitchen cabinet color (refinish) and new countertops

last modified: 7 years ago

Thoughts on painting cabinets dark gray (any recommended colors) and getting white countertop gray veins (granite)? Gold hardware on the cabinets? Open to other suggestions. I am tired of the wood. White or light gray cabinets do not go with the place. We are getting all new appliances including a wolf range. Want it to look timeless and elegant. The floor plan is open so you can see the kitchen from all rooms. Will replace floor too just not yet.

Will you be changing the kitchen flooring? Looks very ivory/yellow..I would not do gray cabinets Or white and gray countertops with your flooring....looks like you also have warm honey flooring in family room.

Yes we will eventually change the kitchen floor to a white

Replace the flooring. Then redo cabinet colors.

Do your flooring first than paint cabinets and last new countertops..does your tile run under your cabinets?

Yes the tile does run under the cabinets.

Ok so you cant put put new flooring over the tile because than you have a difference in height of flooring..you don’t want that it just looks horrible to have that small bump in the floor and adding a finished edge makes worse...only other way is to remove cabinets and take up all the tiles...if you find a really good flooring company sometimes they will remove the tile by actually sawing it along front of cabinets and leaving the tiles under cabinets alone....I would keep your flooring have it professionally cleaned..do your cabinets in a light neutral and reconsider white countertops...a neutral quarts not so white or a very light granite would look much better with your flooring in kitchen and with family room flooring too....your home is lovely and looks like it is filled with shades of neutral..

Calcutta gold quartz would blend beautiful into your home and with both of your floors...something to think about...SW creamy on your cabinets.

Hi - I love your choices (Cream cabinets and Calcutta gold quartz) -- very elegant and greatly appreciate the photos. You don't think the cream kitchen will fade into the background?

What color would you paint the rest of the walls? Currently they are Collingwood: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color-a-room/1526/living-room-1?color=OC-28&source=%2Fen-us%2Fcolor-overview%2Ffind-your-color%2Fcolor%2Foc-28%2Fcollingwood&combination=OC-117,OC-117&room=1526

Also for the backsplash (tiny space) would you go with a cream or a pop of color/ metal accent? Thinking about a smaller herringbone.

Thinking about using french gold for the hardware on the cream cabinets?

Want it to look timeless and elegant.

Well if you want it to look timeless and elegant then you won't paint it dark gray with a white quartz marble look counter because that trend is already on the way out. And don't fool yourself, it is a trend and in another 5-7 years people will be coming here and asking what they should do about their gray/marble look kitchens and if they should paint them or tear them out. Just like now people are coming here asking if they should paint their beautiful wood cabinets white. Just like the ones you have,

So let me ask you a question. Do you LOVE gray? Is it a color you have LOVED for years and years? Even before RH was showing it as the latest trend? Or are you just being influenced by the trends?

If you absolutely LOVE the color, then do as others have suggested. Redo the floors first since those are the hardest to get right, then repaint your cabinets in your favorite gray color.

However if you don't LOVE the color, what color do you love? If you're not sure, what are the major colors in your wardrobe? Start there.

Given the open plan, you definitely have to consider how the finishes of kitchen cabinets and living room furniture relate to one another.

The Gold hardware would be FABULOUS!!!...I would run Calcutta gold all the way up as the backsplash......it is a classic elegant style that would look beautiful from the family room area looking in....painting walls would be last...... so get going on the kitchen save your floors and enjoy..your home is really lovely and this will really make it feel open and fresh...so excited for you..

BM White down is a gorgeous cream that works really nice with Collingwood....that might be a nice choice for the cabinets.
