Yes. A two unit townhouse. I think they were building four of them. Each had the same silliness going on

What is with those windows in the dormers? I can't imagine those will be waterproof.

As for the stone, I've seen worse (although that's not saying much!)

I have 2 more like this - haven't been able to stop because they are on busy streets... 1) stone ONLY on the 2nd floor dormers. (how'd that foundation material get up there?) and 2) stone in the gable detail over the front porch. (same question)

Where and when did this all start?

I started to notice it in the early 90s when lots of the large Toll Brothers (and other large production builders) developments were going up. It started with the brick-only front facade with siding on all other sides. Now you see some with 4 different materials.

Nothing that some elegant shutters couldn't cure.

I think they bough one set of shutters and cut them down to fit 3 windows!
