So HOT.............!!!

I want to work in the yard. I have a sadly neglected vegetable bed that is in dire need of cleaning & prep. It is in the 90s, with heat indexes in the 100s. I don't do mornings, unfortunately, and also unfortunately, working after 6 pm drenches me in sweat. I rationalize it as a kind of sauna treatment. After 4 days of no rain, things are already drooping/withering in the blasting sun.

To add to the pain, a friend in CT texted me yesterday that their temp.s are in the 60s now.

The Heat and humidity are killing me. I moved to a new house recently and was excited to plant all my fruit trees and flowers that have been sitting in pots for far too long. But, we got so much rain in June and July that the ground was saturated and the bugs were out of control, so I put off doing any yard work. I started planting around mid-Aug and am not done yet. I try to do a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the late evening. I find the evenings a little more tolerable than the morning. 5 minutes outside and I am drenched in sweat. I HATE working in soaking wet clothes but the other option would be to change clothes every 5-10 minutes which is not conducive to getting any work done.

I considered waiting till it was cooler but thought I would take advantage of all the September rain to keep my plants watered as they settled into being planted in the ground. As luck would have it, no rain! So, on top of trying to get everything planted, I have to spend a couple of hours everyday watering everything!

This summer has been ridiculously hot. My veggie and flower beds get watered when it doesn't rain daily because we set up an oscilating sprinkler to do the job But they need weeding and it's too hot to do it. Hmm maybe I should go out at night with a flashlight…NOT! Amazingly even the cooler weather orchids don't seem worse for the wear.

Surely I've lost a few pounds from all the sweating. Lets all remember to drink plenty of water.

I agree, the heat has been abominable! I've planted beans that died as soon as they sprouted, and by the time I replant them, it will get cold and kill them! Not even my southern peas could handle this heat. I get up very early and get out, covered in mosquito spray, but I can only stay out about an hour before it gets too hot. Evenings I'm too tired to do much but piddle around.

Not to worry everyone are 3 days of cool weather is just around the corner. Yes it has been hot very hot to hot for me.

I was listening to the weather report the other day and the weather guy was talking about how hot and very humid it was going to be. He said ''It's the air you can wear''. Later that day I was removing tons of very overgrown bromeliads and other plants in one of my flower beds and I do have to say I was wearing lots of 'air'. I am still working on that area today...lots of 'air'.

Our nights are slowly cooling off a little here. When I'm up at 5am I can feel a difference. A lot of my plants that had been taking a break during the horrid summer heat are beginning to bloom again. I can't wait. I'm ready for it to be fall!

I'm about sick to death of the morning heat, though. I've set up my little folding table indoors to do that, because by the time I finish watering & doing other chores in the morning, it's too hot and the mosquitoes are too bad to stay outside. Mosquitoes are MONSTROUS in the evenings, so I figured since the transplanted seedlings need to be inside for awhile anyway (since I have no shade outside), I'll just do all the potting up and repotting inside. I'm so far behind now, I'd have to die to catch up!
