ID for monstrous caterpillar

WHAT KIND OF CATERPILLAR IS THIS?
rural nj river town. zone 6b or 7a. a friend it found by delaware the river yesterday. she brought it to my place and forgot about it. I found it in a cup on the table last night and put it in a makeshift home I through together.
hes playing dead so hes not as bad as he looks but hes not great either. she said yesterday he was bright pink. old if hes dangerous or what? if I keep him what should I feed him?
what do u think? keep him to watch him transform or toss him back to nature? what would u do?!
