My brand new refrigerator does not cool!

last modified: 7 years ago

I had a Frigidaire refrigerator delivered today and it is not cooling. It’s been six hours and it runs, but without cooling. This is the second one I had delivered. The first one had a a machining problem and the door could not be reversed. The model was so new, there were no parts, so I bought a slightly different model.

What is reasonable for me to expect, repair or replace?

I would expect a replacement since it's brand new. A repair is what I'd expect six months or more down the road. Neither was your fault.

Ditto. Replacement, I would not even entertain repairing a dead on arrival.

I’m not looking forward to that conversation since it was such a battle to get this one.

Is it covered under a warranty if they will only repair it?

Yes, I’m sure that’s what they are going to want to do.

Just return it. Maybe another store for a new one? I had this sme thing happen to me, something defective. Do not ask for repairs.

Return/replace would be whether the selling store/dealer will do that.

Repair or replace under manufacturer warranty is at their discretion, and majority of instances the decision is repair.

Dadoes, I suspect that will be their decision. I had to battle to get a new refrigerator when I was unable to reverse mount the last one because of a manufacturing defect. I can’t imagine they will be agreeable to sending out a third one. I’m dreading the call.

Lesson learned, never buy appliances online. The fridge was for my basement kitchen, so I had very few choices due to size restrictions.

Did you pay with a credit card? If you did that gives you a little bit of power if the seller does not make it right. It is not unreasonable to expect a working product to arrive at your door step. If it were me I would just return it and find a local retailer.

Manual just says to allow at least 8 hours before putting food in it.

Call and tell the to take it back and give you back your money. Then to make sure they do, call your cc company and let them know what happened. Try and find one locally. Even if they don't have the model in the store, if they sell the brand, they can get you the model.

Should you manage to return it for a refund, do not get another Frigidaire. They are not the company they used to be, many years ago. Same for Whirlpool.

That can be said of any appliance manufacturer today. They all build cheap throw away appliances. Although I happen to believe that Samsung is by far the worst. At least the parts for Frigidaire can be sourced locally.

I'm with functionthenlook. I've read in a few places that when you have a refrigerator delivered, it's important to let it sit for a day BEFORE plugging it in. I would try unplugging and letting it sit for a day before plugging it in, and then see if it is cool in eight hours.

Order a replacement. No way you should have to repair a brand new appliance before you've even used it. And then I'd shop for an entirely different brand. If Frigidaire gives you a problem, call your CC company and explain what happened. They will dispute the charge on your behalf with Frigidaire.

This is the reply I just received by email after I called this morning and was told my concerns would be addressed by a manager tomorrow. It was what I was expecting.

“We will go ahead and sent this over to our parts and service department o have a technician come and take a look at the unit for you
As per federal law all appliances must be serviced before a return or an exchange can be processed “

Interesting...keep us posted as to what the technician says.

I’ll certainly will! I’ll also try plugging it back in after it’s been unplugged for 24 hours, as suggested.

Kevinande...that just isn’t so. SubZero, Miele, Bosch, Thermador, do not make “cheap throw away appliances.” I have nearly 30 years of experience with SZ. My first, was still going strong when we sold our home in 2015. Our newest SZ, is already 4 years old, and has not had any problems. It’s a superb performing appliance.

Same goes for our Miele built in ovens, Thermador rangetop, and Bosch DW.

As as far as appliances go, you get what you pay for.

Not true on waiting to run a newly-delivered refrigerator ... if they're handled properly during transport. We never advised customers to wait on deliveries when I worked for a local appliance dealer, other than however long it took to cool down. Plugged them in immediately, ready to go.

You can't go by the brand name. Each brand has their own junk and each has good models. That is why you see both negative and positive for a brand name. You have to go by the model you want. Check reviews and testing for that model. At 4 years old most fridges are going strong, no matter the brand since the average lifespan for a fridge is 10 to 12 years. I have a freezer that is 30 years old. That doesn't mean my next freezer of the same brand will last that long.

SZ quality is not what is used to be and that is true of all luxury brands. That said, they are probably built a wee better than your more "affordable" models. Lets just say for the sake of argument you are correct. Not everyone who graces this board can afford to buy SZ, and a host of other luxury brands that cost as much as a used vehicle. In some cases a new vehicle. A new appliance for some people is a major purchase. A refrigerator that cost $1500 to $3000 may be nothing to you, but some have to save or do without in order to facilitate that purchase. So please consider that while your expressing how wonderful your SZ is. I am personally partial to Miele, but my extremely expensive dishwasher was a POS that only lasted two years and was replaced with a Samsung that I paid less than $50.00 for on Clearance.

My point being the cost of something is sometimes not directly related to it's quality. In fact you will find the same components and same setups in Luxury brands as the affordable brands. They just stick a different nameplate and a higher sales price on it and we the American consumer just run out and buy it because we think it's better when its the same thing. A Ford fusion and a Lincoln MKZ are the same car. Guess which one is cheaper.

Did you actually put food in it? Because an empty fridge never feels cool. Fill it with water bottles and see if they get cold.

Kevinande, your analogy doesn’t work. I wouldn’t touch a Ford OR Lincoln car. Both fare poorly, compared to Toyota, Honda, Subaru, or most any import. I’m not even considering the more luxury brands, like Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and the like.

It is totally untrue that SZ is not what it used to be. I somehow doubt you have first hand experience with the brand.

I’ve never read of anyone on this forum complaining about their new SZ not cooling, getting flack from customer service, and wishing they’d never bought the fridge. Quite the contrary. Just yesterday, or the day before, there was a thread here with posters extolling the virtues of their SZ, saying it was well with the $$$. And, SZ to this day, has the best customer service in the industry.

On the the other hand, there’ve been a multitude of complaints about Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid, all of which have changed ownership several times, over the years. SubZero has always had the same owners (though the name changed), and US manufacturing sites. Samsung, too has many has many disgruntled customers on this site, and off. My sister-in-law was one. When she and her husband moved, and gutted the kitchen in their new home, their first purchase was a SZ. They couldn’t be more pleased.

I understand that many people cannot afford a SZ fridge. I’m more replying to your blanket statement about quality of all brands these days, including luxury brands. It’s like when some posters write that all stones are porous, and need sealing. Untrue, as soapstone is impervious, does not etch or stain. Such obvious misinformation peeves me.

Before making a blanket statement, get your facts straight.

If you've had two in a row with problems, I would change to another brand. This happened to us the first year Bosch made refrigerators (I hear they're better now), and the repair guy on Fridge #2 told us to demand a new one from our dealer and change brands. He said once you have a problem that quickly, it won't go well over time. My two cents.

Emily, I put a thermometer in it. It was 68 after 20 hours. My husband’s first thoughts were the same as yours.

    Spot on, Just Me!

And, avoid models with ice/water through the door. They have the most problems, and complaints.
