Bar pulls or knobs on cabinets?

I’d appreciate input on what sort of pulls we should get for our kitchen. Everything including the island is being refaced with a new backsplash, lvt on the floor. The cabinets will be creamy white and the island a dark color. I’m seeing lots of pictures of kitchens where the cabinets have knobs and the drawers have bar pulls. I like the look, but are the cabinets too tall for knobs? Would you use bar pulls on everything or knobs on the cabinets only? And should they be black or rubbed bronze (light fixtures are rubbed bronze)?

Wait until it's all done to chose your hardware. I personally prefer to use all pulls - don't like knobs. They're messy if one has wet hands and needs something from an upper cabinet.

Another all pulls person here. They are much more ergonomic, and are more likely to keep your fingers from touching the cab doors.

I like a combination of knobs for cabinets and good-sized pulls for all drawers.

As far as the finish goes, absolutely wait until everything else is installed.

I'm just finishing my parents' kitchen and since the beginning had contemplated either ORB (to add richness/warmth) or polished nickel (to add sparkle and airiness) to Ivory cabinets. I had been thinking all along that it was going to be the ORB for their space. It was only once the floors were stained, cabinets installed with all moulding/trim, paint on walls, countertops in, and my specific backsplash sample in sight that I switched my decision at the last minute and decided on the polished nickel. I'm extremely happy I did and also went with polished nickel details on kitchen lighting while mixing some warmth in with ORB on all interior/exterior door hardware (including hinges) and all hallway lights

I like simple knobs for cabinets and pulls for drawers.

I'm a 'pulls' gal! To me knobs for cabinets are like buttons for shirts. :)

It sounds like there’s no steadfast rule—it comes down to people’s preference? Our lighting will stay ORB, so does that mean the knobs/pulls should match or can they be different?

Thanks very much for all your input! I’d love to hear more if anyone else sees this. :)

    I prefer all pulls.

I would wait until you are finished to see. But I like the look of knobs and pulls to break up all the monotony. I don't find knobs hard to use. There is no "rule" that you must follow, do what you like!

My original deliberate "plan" was actually to have ORB cabinet hardware and polished nickel lights because I like to mix metals and find it adds more character to a space. But the polished nickel hardware was too beautiful with the Ivory cabinet and I knew I wanted polished nickel lights for some sparkle, so no mix there.

My point is, no, you don't "have" to match hardware to lighting. But get yourself samples of whatever other hardware options you are open to and play with the combinations. ORB could work with polished nickel, chrome, and even new age brass if the ORB is very dark without hints of other undertones. The key to figuring it out is samples in your house in your space with the other components

I work in the hardware industry and see this question daily. The combination of knobs and pulls has been the trend for many years. And is still design appropriate. Depending on the design aesthetic-pulls everywhere is trending strong. You said you are refacing so the style of the cabinet face also plays to which hardware will look best. You can base your finish off of the finishes in your kitchen-what are your appliances? If they are stainless then brushed nickel would work well. What finish is your faucet? For example-if you like polished nickel-it is always a good idea to have it repeated somewhere. Black and ORB work but only if the ORB leans Venetian Bronze (copper accents showing through). True ORB is an even, dark, deep, rich brown. Your upper doors are very tall and long (8”) pulls would be pretty and striking but they are narrow so knobs would also work. It truly is a personal preference. As far as drawers-I am a pulls person! It all depends on the overall style of the kitchen. In a farmhouse style-cup pulls centered on drawers look great. In transitional-long pulls, in contemporary-keep it sleek and long. I am not a fan of knobs on drawers. A) they don’t bear the weight of a long drawer well, B) if you use 2 you need 2 hands to open it or the drawer will pull out of balance. Hardware is beautiful and functional, use what you love!

I think wait until the cabinets are done and please get rid of that fancy support for the island counter get some invisible steel supports .IMo knobs are more traditonal and all bars a bit more modern I am an all bar girl but I am also very contemporary in my style,

I think it's personal preference. We still have the original 21 year old cabinets and the builder put all knobs, so when we replaced the builder brass cheappie knobs, I went with brushed nickel knobs because I didn't want to have to plus up the holes on the drawers. When we finished our basement last fall we installed a kitchenette and I went with all pulls for a change of pace. I discovered I prefer a mix of knobs and pulls. I think knobs are easier to have on the cabinets for ease of grabbing it. We tend to get our pockets caught on the knobs on the drawers.

Thank you so much for all the input! Patricia Colwell, I’m definitely getting rid of those ugly corbel things. No worries there. :)

Jones House Designs, thank you! And I definitely don’t like knobs on drawers either for those reasons.

This is a closeup of the lightning. It definitely has some amber tones coming through, and I’m thinking the current nickel pulls look odd with it. But I am definitely not an expert. So probably either ORB or black pulls/knobs?

The cabinets will be shaker. This is the adjoining dining room—it gives an idea of what the style is around the house.
