Help with exterior

Meeting with the designer this week to choose our brick....ignore the stone in the elevation, we are doing all brick. initially I was wanting white(not painted) brick with black shutters but the amount of white houses going into our neighborhood has changed my mind. I’d rather have something a little different. I’m now thinking about red brick with either dark shutters or a more natural cedar to go with woodwork in the entry. I want a timeless traditional type feeling.

Another comment about the shutters proposed....they are compromised by the belt course of brick around the bottom of the house. I would eliminate that “ornamentation” from the plan. That would allow correctly sized shutters for your windows. And look at paneled or louvred shutters, not rustic plank shutters. They will at least look like they have a purpose. Finally....consider squaring off the curved tops of your windows. Curved top windows are always more difficult to treat inside....how will you cover them? Regular, rectangular windows are classic. At most, beef up their trim so they stand out from the brick facade. Good luck!

What do you want the house to look like? Do you have inspiration photos?

The porch on the house to me looks lodgey, which would make brick too formal. I also dislike natural cedar with brick- brick is a 'city' or formal material, raw cedar shutters are the opposite of that.

Have you looked at doing the whole house in hardiplank? Cheaper and more in line with the architecture, and would be different from your neighbors.

Finally, in the name of all things sacred, please get shutters the correct size, the ones that were drawn are ridiculous. They need to be the height of the window and half the width- IE if they were closed they would cover the window...

I agree about the shutters and will make sure they are the right size and go with the house. i am mainly looking for advice on brick color. I don’t want to use hardi board as it is very common in this neighborhood. Almost all of the houses are more of the modern farmhouse style and include that.

Also, I’m not worried about treating the curved windows inside. Only one is a bedroom. The other one is in the garage.

Your house is Country French. Look at homes by Jack Arnold, the king of Country French He has a unique way with exterior materials.

You don't have a Georgian so plain red brick and black shutters are just wrong for this style home. The shutters have to be board and batten with this style home.

Beverly, aren’t the ones I pictured board and batten style? Are you saying the color scheme is wrong for this style house? What colors would you suggest?

Yes I agree that the drawing is incorrect but the home’s that he has built have corrected that. We have already brought this up with him.

Micah, I have no personal knowledge of your situation, but I will tell you designers and architects & builders work from what is on drawings and written in contracts to keep everyone on the same page so that the laborer on the job site knows exactly what is expected.

I understand that, we have an elevation that has been marked up to be correct and changed to brick only, as well as a few other corrections that were made after we went under contract. The project manager had a copy of that.

Would white limestone match the home style? Accented with wood tones.

Or, lime washed brick perhaps?

Just trying to consider other options...

This is a typical builder's house rendered by a CAD operator. It has one of almost everthing, including an oversized, completely unneccessarily high roof.

The best advice for this sort of house is to simplify.

Reduce the number of exterior decorations and get down to the basic style and proportions of the house without all the cake decoration.

Simplify, simplify, simplify.
