Mango rooted from cutting. My experience.

Just a follow-up to show my rooted mango cutting. I'm not saying a rooted mango is better in the ground than a grafted one with an already well-established root system, but I'm just saying that it can work to propagate them this way. I will say the initial roots on the cutting were quite fragile and easily broken off. I had to be very careful potting it up.

First pic is just after rooting in the propagation container. I did accidently break off a big root already. I used an over-the-counter hormone. Rooting medium was perlite + potting soil. No additional heat. Our summer was hot enough.

Second pic is the cutting potted up with its first growth flush.

Now, this was just an experiment with a fairly young Ataulfo seedling plant, so it could be that young seedlings and immature growth root better than mature plants. I have no idea. I don't have any mature mangoes growing nearby (northern Virginia!) to experiment with.

So if you're tipping or cutting back your mango trees, don't throw the clippings away. Send them to me!! LOL!

Nice, do you think you'll be able to get fruit in a few years from your mother plant? I really love the Kent mangos and have thought about ordering one. But I did plant a seed from a store bought just as a fun experiment.

I'm not sure how mango trees compare, but I know that for a number of ornamental trees young seedlings are way, way easier to root than old, mature trees are. "Juvenility" is of great importance in cutting propagation.

Fruity Paws (N-Va 7a): The 'mother' tree was a seedling, so it's probably 5 or more years away from fruiting. I am growing seedlings mainly as rootstock for grafting.

Yeah, and you also mentioned you weren't sure if it was a factor. I chimed in to add that it very likely was a factor.

Here is a link to a study discussing mango propagation methods that I was able to find after only a couple minutes on Google. It discusses the importance of juvenility, both forced and relating to tree age, on the rooting process. Hopefully this answers the question you asked more effectively than my educated guess did.

One interesting line in there I noticed was that rooted cuttings "could not be established into plants in the field." It didn't elaborate, and I really wonder how exactly they failed to develop. I'll be curious to see how yours does.

Mine will never see the ground. Only in a container. Yes, we'll see. It's just an experiment.

Dave, please show or describe the source-of-cutting seedling. Size, age, cutting taken from where on it?

Cutting was from a trimmed Ataulfo mango seedling grown from a pit. Seedling only two or three years old. Seedling was about two feet high. Cutting taken from the top-most growth.
