Electric heat can be expensive, especially with stairs to let all your heat go upstairs, so, unless you are using an electric fireplace primarily for decoration ( I wouldn't ) perhaps that's not the best use of the space.

You could simply cover it with drywall and/or enclose the entire area as a storage nook rather than have it end up being a place where clutter gathers..

What's behind the louvered doors? What's beneath the stairs? How close is the access to water lines? I looked at the mantel on the brick wall and thought "bar": You might could add a peninsula in front of brick floor beside the door and open shelving against the brick wall and create a "bar".

On the other hand, if you could match the brick, you could enlarge the brick floored area a bit -- perhaps extending it to be even with the bottom of the steps -- and create a new entrance to your downstairs. You'd be taking out the existing (small high) window and door and adding patio doors -- not having a hinged door swing into the room "in the way" could be a plus. Where there is a step down, you could add a bookcase as a room divider, leaving an access to the family room beside the stairs. Doing that would define the entry to the family room as separate and apart from the family room and the most natural use of that nook would then be a place to park a rolling cart island that you could roll outside onto your porch or deck or patio for entertaining and family indoor/outdoor living.

I would drywall that space in and make it a walk in pantry. We finished our basement last fall and one of my favorite features in the big "Costco" pantry we had built.

I’m curious was the pantry from Costco, or just built to hold Costco sized items?

A bar?

Jen - our pantry was built with the intention on holding bigger sized "Costco" items. (Like the 15 rolls of paper towels that come in a package.) We had The Container Store install the Elfa shelving system in it so that the space was maximized. It's drywall with folding doors, not a separate cabinet pantry.
