I have an 18x18 tile that was installed in 2006 and it's impervious to almost anything and I don't find it hard on my legs.

I love the appearance of wood also, but not the wearablity or maintenance with dogs and people who are just not careful. IMO a rectified, realistic appearance wood look tile combines the best of both items.

I've also always had tile and never found it too cold or hard on my feet. I grew up in Italy and it's just what I am used to having. The initial cost may be more, but properly set tiles will outlast the house!

I have a german shepherd and a special needs child who couldn't care less about floors and pool water. :) I did install hardwood upstairs as the gsd isn't allowed up.

I love how easy it cleans, worry free 99.9% of the time. This main floor had 3 different type of flooring for over 23 years. I'm glad to make all the changes this year.
