Some say a dog will better recognize a name that ends in a long vowel sound.

TONTO, WILLOW, LARI, TEDDY are some that I used.

PIA, DOC, MAC, SHEP, are some that did not follow that thought.

Made no difference in that I loved them all.

Ask your son to form a committee comprised of the prettiest girls at school and have them decide. You and your husband may not like the result, but your son will think you are his favorite parents this month!

She is so adorable!!! We named our cat Sunshine! We adopted her on an unseasonably cold and cloudy gloomy day in August of 2007. Made sense.

Michele, we got ours the day before an epic blizzard. We named her Storm. Sometimes, Stormy. We talked about Snowflake, Snowball, Blizzard, Windy. Also thought about February names, Valentine, Candy. Settled on Storm.

I like names which reflect the personality/behavior of the pet. Our wonderful dog who came to us with allergies was Scratch. Our cat who used to suddenly flop down to take a nap was Flopsy. Took a little time to get to know them, but the names just seemed to fit..

Dogs need a name with no more than two syllables with distinct consonant sounds to understand that you are calling them when at the dog park.-Re : Snowball or Cocoa-, the "O" sound is too similar to NO!, which is a scolding. Know that many dogs are named Bella, due to that vampire Twilight series. If you call her, you want her to respond, not 5 other dogs too,

-Considering your teenage son's age: Cujo or COWGIRL. Both are hard consonant names that won't sound silly when called in public spaces.

My Shihtzu-Bichon is named Cowboy. His colors faded to WHITE with a bit of apricot now. His furry legs reminded me of furry cowboy chaps. We've never met another dog with the same name.

So glad I spotted this on the front page! Your dog is one of the cutest smile-making creatures I've seen in a while. Love many of the suggestions shared so far, especially the clever idea of entrusting your son with a name committee. I'm not overly fond of 'human' names for pets but do like Lola for your showgirl and Cara, short for caramel. All the best to you and your new furbaby.
