I saw your 'white bedding' ideabook. Depends on your use and amount you'd wash it. I like mine from Kohl's, and I notice the reviews, whether great, ok, or bad.

Are you wanting warmth or finished look?

If you invest in some "sheet blankets" -- thin warm blankets (or just add thick flannel sheets you can put over and under your regular sheets ) -- you might not need thicker comforter's for warmth in a home with central heat and you can focus your budget on the top layer -- comforter or bed spread.

Empathy with the budget issues.

In my own experience, I find that trying to put the thicker comforters on top usually means I've had to either add a bed skirt or even a thin spread beneath the top comforter that fits nearly floor to floor -- or at least frame to frame -- so the bed springs and frame don't show. For that reason, I prefer thinner layers of bedding and try to make my top cover thin as well. My experience is with twin and full beds, though and a thin king or queen spread works to do that on a full bed and a full or queen spread does that on a twin bed.

Wall Mart usually has a small selection of machine quilted quilts before the holidays and though most patterns are not particularly to my liking, there is usually one of the half dozen or so patterns I actually would use - cost under $100 each and pillow shams to match are available..

Wall Mart also has faux quilted solid colored bed spreads -- appears to be a heat imprinted pattern -- that are thin and would work well as a warm "sheet blanket" beneath a more expensive spread if you don't like that look for your spread. I have one of what appears to be the same kind of spread given to me literally decades ago and, surprisingly, that heat imprinted pattern is standing the test of time. Again, pillow shams to match are available.

Belk has a thin quilted king sized bedspread that is the same material on both sides (my son had a couple of these in a now, possibly discontinued, solid root beer brown, that I really liked) -- cost under $100. The ones he now has are solid gray and I like them, too. I try to avoid those spreads that are not reversible.
