I would love to get some ideas on how to layout this space within the kitchen of my 1979 tudor home.

Wow! .... and is this the appointed eating area?

How about running with it and a giant long medieval style table and a dozen chairs....

Yes, it is the "eating area" .... I am definitely intimidated as I want to modernize it with a casual eating area and then maybe an open bar space. I am going to be using it to entertain socially rather than have large eating gatherings. I am one person with no children in this space!! :-) and I want it to be a little more modernized.

Wowsers! What is that giant white thing? Is that the sink? Another cooktop? Are you demo-ing this whole space?

It is an indoor grill. The backside is a gas fireplace.

I am leaving everything as is and moving in, but I am going to fresh paint and just need help with furniture layout within. Trying to think of unique ideas for the space that could include a free standing bar or eating area with rug.

I would get a long rectangle table that seats eight comfortably and could extend to seat ten. I would paint the walls a warm yellow tan.

I would remove the side facing cabinet and have it face forward.

I would add a long rectangular table with 8 chairs. You can use a simple wood transitional style. Even if you don't have big meals regularly, you can use the table as a serving buffet for parties, and pull some of the chairs into the living area when you want to for extra seating.

wow... let me know when you want to tackle the lighting my head is exploding with this space its pretty amazing. let me say all your guests will be in aw....

    Dang!!!

Because I had just browsed for tables, I'll post them. One of theirs seems a stain lighter than yours, and the other [rustic java] seems darker than yours.

weathered grey/brown finish with slight distressing, 18" extension leaf, and a trestle base which gives it a casual country flair. The dining room chairs and dining bench are upholstered with your choice of either gray or beige fabric.

When I saw the paint on the hood, I thought of this rug. With click you'd see their display photo that looks a bit like your place's colors.

You will likely want some relation to the wonderful elements throughout the space!? these delicate shapes, an idea.

The ironwork of the beams, another direction for some part of art or decor? a bit of industrial in dining?

They call this an easygoing accompaniment... Naturally hewn edges elicit a sense of the natural in this unique dining table, which also highlights the beautiful wood grain of its source material. The classic parson chair is given a modern makeover.

@updatr If you want a bar, the best area for it would be by the bay windows. So, instead of server, or buffet put a trolley with a nice minimal plant, your liquor, stemware. That would be the most appropriate place to put it, in my opinion.

Oh, also fill up the sides of the indoor grill with fire wood wood.

Your home is already gorgeous, with nothing in it. I can't wait to see what you do with it. Please share pictures as you go along.. Just remember, less is more..

"I want it to be a little more modernized" Modern styling is complete trash. Keep the character of what you have.

I think she meant in the furnishings, not that she is going to do anything about removing any of the character of what she has.. I think that's probably why she purchased this house, because of its' character. I know I would have bought for that reason.. It's gorgeous..

i love all of these comments!!!! thank you all so much. making me feel so good about this purchase.

Keep the character of what you have.

yeah, because nothing says Tudor like a giant southwestern grill in the eating area and 70's oak cabinets!

The previous owners already muddled up this kitchen area. So adding a danish table and a persian rug will help?? really?

Your windows and beams are gorgeous! oh the beautiful space you could have w/the right elements! It's a gorgeous space, in spite of what's been done to it. consider bringing in a kitchen designer who is familiar w/vintage homes. see what plans they can come up with for you. it will be something to aim for in the future.

It will be something I aim for in the future because it is nothing I could afford to do right now. Oh well.

I would not be in a rush to buy big pieces of furniture.

Now that you are blessed with a large home, see how your life and lifestyle change.

You may find that you are moved to have larger groups of people over for dinner and want to be able to seat 14, not 8.

I would wait a good year before you buy that large dining room table.

Don't get the dining room rug yet, because it needs to be in proportion to the table.

What I would do, many people do who have large dining rooms, is get a smaller table with two chairs to put under the bay window. That is for you to eat at, and can serve as a serving table as well when you entertain.

I do not think you need a "bar" in the dining room. Do you really serve that many mixed drinks during dinner?

You have a rack for wine already.

What you might want to do after you have lived in the house a while is think about if you want to make some modifications to the kitchen layout.

One thing I would do for sure is have a cabinet built to hide the wastebasket, and have it also have a space in it for a wastebasket for recyclables that when full you take the contents to the garage or the bin on the street.

Cooking meat over an open fire in the kitchen is exactly what was done in a Tudor kitchen.

Henry VIII's Hampton Court palace for example, had several kitchens, each with different purposes, and meat was roasted in front of the big fires in the Great Kitchen. it was hot as blazes and the cooks that worked the roasting pits were given more than the average amount of beer to cool them down, and by the end of their working day were rather inebriated.

    But here's another question-

Is this the only place for your guests to eat dinner?

Because if it is, you would have your back to them while you are getting things ready.

There is effectively no counter space facing the guests.

You might as well have your guests in a separate dining room altogether and not have them see the flotsam and jetsam of the meal preparation.

    @loobab wow...thank you.

Oh, and if you pick a new china pattern, get one that's either been around a while and will stand the test of time, or that the company has a policy that you can return if they discontinue it.

If you will be entertaining the hordes, (and from all our replies, you will have a lot of Houzzers begging for invites, moi aussi!) you will need a lot of china, and there is nothing more frustrating than having your pattern discontinued within a year of selecting it!!

i have my grandmother's tiffany china from early last century...so excited

Start visiting local antique stores. You will be amazed at what you will be able to find there. Gorgeous large tables. For pennies on the dollar. Chairs. Stunning china and crystal. And lots of wonderful old chandeliers, etc., that will make it worth your while to have re wired. Seriously...I see comfortable vintage. Eclectic. Beautiful! Enjoy the journey!
