I think I'd repaint the cabinets and the mantle either a bright white or black. Then put some bold art or framed black & white photos in the space where the table lamp is. Move the lamp to a different spot or a different room.

Yes the colors are off. I'd paint the cabinets and mantel a cooler, brighter white or something darker like black or navy.

What about painting them the color of the wall? I’m afraid white will be so stark. I’d like a stained mantel but then is that too busy w the whitewash and black ?

Leave the color on the fireplace. Try changing the color of the cabinets and mantle to something like Benjamin Moore’s color Atmosphere it will pull the blue tone out of what you have done to the fireplace. There is too much vertical height going on between the lamp and pieces on the mantle. Maybe change out the curtains to a very light bluish/green, not a dark or stark teal more of a satin finish.

I wouldn't paint the cabinets the wall color. too blah. paint them a nice white.

look at how the white frames the fireplace and adds some badly needed contrast. Everything in that room is monotone.

if you can't do any of the shelving like I've shown, then get some artwork to hang over the one on the left. remove that lamp and instead do a potted plant w/some greenery. do a tall, thin type of canvas with some color to it. bring in some warm elements. look at how the wood and the leather keep the space from looking too cold.

I don’t how to find a mantel that attaches how this one does. Does that mean I need a custom made one?

take that one off and make one that's longer out of a wood beam (you should be able to unscrew that from the corbel. at least that's what it looks like in the photo)

you can find a large 4X6 or 4x8 beam from the big box stores. We got one made of Douglas Fir, beat it up a bit with chains and a hammer, stained and installed it. maybe $40?

(i'm in the middle of a floor redo and still have to paint everything)

Yes this room is battling warm and cool. The carpet is white, the brick we painted was dark brown the outside light is yellow/green turns grays blue
