Nice dirt. I'm putting in some conifers myself. How far from the fence/house are you going to plant it?

Ken, on the tree forum, I did use the proper name.....too lazy today. But one of those members did send me a link showing the trees in the link you list above. I had a heart attack!!!! When I saw the one that looks like a wooly mammoth I couldn’t believe me eyes! Awesome trees! When Bert came over yesterday and I showed him those pictures he was really surprised......so I told him what I wanted and he started digging.....lol. I hope I can learn to prune so it doesn’t become a “wooly mammoth!! :-)

where does the soil line start up against your house? It looks like it’s up on the window trim. It may be deceiving but from

the pic it looks like a major issue.

That’s the bottom of the screen porch off the back of the house. No windows close. Porch gets winterized with plexiglass storms and heated for the cats. First picture shows the screen porch better.

Gotcha - looked like the soil level is above the floor level - water does crazy things even then filtering through the soil.

Plant it instead in the center of the bed extension (the part that points away from the house), so it is coordinated with the shape of the bed. And is a little farther from the house - you don't want to be looking into the shaded side of a spruce that is close to a building, having the possibility of the tree eventually functioning as a ladder for nuisance animals like raccoons to use to get onto the roof.

Maybe I should leave it where it is an stake to take that type of shape??????

It does still seem like a tight area for this plant. Do you have any other locations for it?

I'd rather plant a dwarf conifer is this area. If you want blue this is a nice option as its a slower grower but you get a nice start with size of plant.

From what I was told by nursery staff, thought I was buying a dwarf spruce. Unfortunately I have no other place for it to go. I have a city lot and limited sun. Also it was the weeping shape that was attractive as well as the color. Can it not be somewhat contained by pruning?

It's already lost visually over on the side against the fence like that (where it is going to hang over the fence into the neighbor's if left there) - find a place where you can feature it and give it enough room. It is hard to believe that there is such a huge difference in light exposure between where it is now (and immediate vicinity) that it would make a poor specimen if moved to somewhere else in the same setting.

If it had been a dense little dwarf kind it would not have had comparatively long sweeping branches, had gotten as tall as it is already before purchase. Features that will be interfered with if you start snipping it back.

Let me see if I can download some pictures to give you an idea of my backyard size. I get 1/2 day sun.

The Hydrangea is to the right of the spruce. The blue flag gives you an idea from the 1st photo. I’ll post another one or two pictures in next post

I would plant it in the middle as Embothrium suggested. BUT, it's your yard. It will look nice, IMHO I think it will look nicer longer in the center.
