Tiny Blah Entry Hall

My entry hall is tiny & blah. The measurements are 46” wide by 108” (9’) long. I am discarding the succulent photos which are directly in line with entry into kitchen. I am considering wallpaper or moldings. Overall my home is very pleasing to me, with neutral walls, (BM Subtle throughout) and creamy white woodwork & cabinets (BM Mascarpone). The color is in my art, pillows, books & objects. Spring & summer predominant pillow color is green reflecting the green outdoors & green in painting. Fall & winter I use rust colors with cozy throws. I have no particular preference of style. My art & sculpture is from different styles but works for me because I love each piece with great memories. Except the succulent photos which I bought from Wisteria for size. For the hallway, I have a few pieces I might relocate or maybe have some fun, contemporary botanicals done on my sheet music from childhood.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help. It’s fun to follow others & see all your ideas.
I can only get 4 photos to post now, so will continue photos as I can of surrounding space & art.

Pieces of art I might consider moving

The green photos work well. If you are thinking of changing one idea would be to add more pieces primarily green in white frames. A runner on the floor might be nice--and useful.

right off the bat, I would say, 'new light, and new door'. those two alone, w/your prints, will look 10X better.

Your living room is very nice. I'd say any of these doors would be a better fit w/what you have. and the panel glass would lighten up that entry.

    Beth,
Hadn’t thought of a new door. Great idea. The ceiling is only 8’ tall. Would light fixtures be too much for low ceiling, small room.

Like the idea of rugs but I have neuropathy and have to be very careful of tripping hazards, as per doctor. Getting all edges to lay flat is tricky.

i have a flush mount light in my hallway (and it's lower than yours! just measure. obviously you don't want something that hangs too low, but a flush mount or semi flush would be fine.

Hi Phoebe. Your home is quite lovely. I love a lot of your art. The bookcases flanking the picture window are awesome. Love the mirrors and the horse sculpture is to die for. Love Beth’s idea to use a door with glass inserts. I changed a door in a previous home with a glass door. Made a huge impact on the light coming into my home.

Here are a couple of lights to consider. The crystal light throws some great light patterns to add interest in your small foyer.

Love your home, Phoebe! Such a cool vibe, beautiful floors and loads of interesting items. Wish I had a large window like that. It casts a beautiful natural light into your very inviting living room. I actually love that punch of green in the entry from the two large art pieces. I'll be interested to see everyone's ideas, but the first thing that came to mind was if you can't have a rug on the floor, how about one on the wall?

Your house is great. The art and sculpture and all the furnishings are obviously well curated, beautiful, and interesting. The succulent photos in your entry don't match that vibe.

I like Kim's idea of hanging a rug, or any other art or object of interest that moves you. You might also consider doing something radical...like painting just the entry dark. It would be a great backdrop for whatever you hang on the wall.

    Hi Phoebe-

    Your home is just beautiful!

The green succulent photos are great, but I see how you would like something else there.

It doesn't look like there is anyplace to hang a coat or hat, or check yourself on the way in or out.

What might be nice on that wall would be an interesting mirror with a small shelf below to put your mail or keys.

If you feel the entryway is dark, you could put sconces on either side of the mirror that are battery powered so you don't have to fuss with wiring.

An wood mirror would be nice, perhaps a round or oval one with an interesting frame.

There are some very nice carved Indian ones, and ones made from Indian windows and screens.

You can also see if there are some nice hooks or some sort of wall system with hooks to hang coats, hats, a tote bag etc that is attractive.

This is a copy of the Eames coat rack-

    https://www.franceandson.com/products/mid-century-modern-hang-it-all-coat-rack-walnut46?

cb2 has many wall-mounted coat racks, some mount horizontally, some mount vertically.

    https://www.cb2.com/rise-and-fall-coat-rack/s678356

If you have the space there are many types of vintage brass coat racks and brass coat hooks.

    https://foter.com/brass-coat-racks

On the shorter wall opposite the mirror shelf and hooks , you can put some art work.

If there isn't enough space for two things next to each other, maybe one thing on top of another.

You might even use the two succulents there.

One thing to think about is that people are just going to pass through that corridor and not linger.

So you don't want any art that requires any length of time to look at. That corridor is not where you need a bottle neck!

Another thing is that the corridor is not wide, so people can't step back from the art either to look at the piece from a distance which some works need.

That corridor may actually be a great place for the succulents on the smaller wall, if they fit.

A new door and overhead fixture seems seems rather expensive, especially when the cost of installation is added on.

Another though for the walls of the corridor (if you have these things) is interesting three dimensional artifacts that won't project too much into the walkway.

Things like fossils, corals, large specimen seashells, interesting architectural salvage pieces, a large candlestick, taxidermy all are interesting.

Just found this great mirror on sale Arhaus.com would be beautiful hung over a textured wallpaper in the entry...was $900! For $249 would hang it vertical.

I find your succulent prints merely meh compared to your other artwork. I think they are too monochrome to add the interest that your entryway needs. The other issue is the reflections off the glass. With darker artwork, reflections become a real problem. It's particularly noticeable in your first pic with the door open, but it's apparent in the other pics as well, especially on the upper pic. If you like the artwork and want to keep it, you could spring for non-reflective glass (any frame shop should have it).

I agree about new lighting; you should be able to find an interesting low-profile fixture that won't hang too low. The doors Beth posted would enhance the entryway, but don't make any door decisions without considering how they look from the outside. Your current door is very traditional, so would a more modern door suit the exterior?

grover, that looks so good! The darker wall was part of why I selected the photo I posted. I liked the sconces too, but prefer the larger rug as in your mock-up. Did you alter the door color? It just about matches the rug which is kinda cool.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Thank you all for your suggestions. A lot of good food for thought. I have been wanting to do something there but haven’t been able to make up my mind.
    1. I do not like & will not keep the green succulents. They were a filler that I’m very tired of.
    2. I have thought I might paint the wall.. thinking a soft olive green referencing the greens in painting in living room which is seen along with entry wall. I have black accents throughout my home, so love the black wall ideas but am unsure if it would be too dark. ..?
    3. Have considered wallpaper. I’m all about textures. Here are a few from Houzz. Be warned. They’re all different; no theme here. Please tell me which ones might be good and which ones toss. Oops thought I knew how to get them from my ideabook. Differs from phone to tablet to desktop.

    So to add:

    1. Have thought of a series of botanicals. Have sheet music from childhood with a wonderful patina. Have the idea of having someone draw whimsical botanicals on them. Found a fun frame @ Crate and Barrel. Stuck a poster botanical in it.
My dog, Charlie wanted to be in on the action on the side. What do you think.?

There is the Houzz Photo tab on my desk top but not iPad. Why???

    HIWE,

Beautiful mirror. It would add a light reflective surface, but I'm not much into a mirror in that location. It's such a small confined space that I'm thinking it might be like a magnifying mirror to walk into all day.

    Thanks

Have you considered "furnishing" your entry with wainscoting?

You could move the pictures to a hallway outside a bedroom, store them or even donate them to Habitat for Humanity Restore Store where someone with a great place for them could use them..

Phoebe. Here’s the photo tab if you haven’t already figured it out on iPad.

Thanks, Seejay. I do have that button but it takes me to my personal photos, not the Houzz ideabook photos. I went to my desktop & was able to download the wallpaper there. Confusing to me.

    HIWE,
I like the black & white also. So would you use the black & white paper with the botanicals or separately?

    suezbell,
Thanks for your suggestion, although wainscoting is not really my thing.
The green succulents will definitely be given to someone. Habitat is a great idea.

Hi Phoebe - I just love your home! Your sculptures & art is so unique. I adore your horse sculpture & that sofa pillow in front of the solid is awesome. I can’t give good advice but my fav suggestions so far are these...

Also frames are expensive, so if you can use the frames without the succulents in them somewhere else or even in the hall, I would not give them away. They can be painted with new art added and matted. Just my opinion.

    Daisy,
The chairs are Crate and Barrel. I’ve had them several years. I didn’t want to cover the cane in back but they are not comfortable without pillows. Thankfully my chairs float so I can see the back side. Also the seat cushions slip, so I put non-slip carpet pad under. I still like the look of them.

    Kim,

Thank you for thinking of me. I'm still in limbo about the entry. One of these days it will come to me.

We're in the power outage area in CA, so we'll be out of touch from 7pm tonight for maybe 48 hours.

Frustrating, but certainly much better than the people near Sonoma who are evacuating and losing their homes to fire. Always something to be grateful for. (uh, oh, preposition ending sentence!).

    Phoebe

Phoebe, I'm so sorry your weekend is looking like a real bummer, to put it mildly. At least you had a heads-up about it. Sounds like quite a crisis going on, and it's so unfortunate for the millions of people affected by the fires, wind and electrical concerns. I guess your entry dilemma is pretty far down on the to-do list for now. Hang in there and know we'll be thinking of you.

    (where's the fire at? haha)

Selene, a history of your comments shows that you're both mostly interested in promoting the replica MCM furniture sold at a NYC furniture store, Manhattan Home Design. You wouldn't happen to work there or own the store, or be friends or partners (personally or professionally) with someone who is, would you?

Also, there have been more than a dozen BBB complaints in the past three years about the store you've been recommending, which I would find problematic if I were looking to buy something there.

Your posts in this thread and others sound very similar to some by Gabriella Robbins, James Sorenson, Daniel Blake and others, who are all also promoting MCM replica furniture in general, and Manhattan Home Design in particular. Are all of you friends or partners in this venture? Or bots? Because this is looking very co-ordinated at this point.
