Freckles and Scepter'd Isle

Freckles, a shrub rose bred by Dr. Griffith J. Buck (US, 1976). The urn shaped blooms have soft coral pink with stipple give the blooms a unique look. It also has nice sweet fragrant. Some said this rose occasional repeats later in the season, but I just got mine as an own root this year and it has good repeat in my garden. This rose is unique and healthy at the same time, I love it. Helen

Scepter'd Isle (AUSland), a David Austin rose, bred in 1989 and released in 1997 (UK). It is a beautiful, healthy and great fragrance David Austin garden rose. I love the soft romantic look of this rose. Helen

Thanks Kim. That’s great to know. I almost skipped this rose because I thought it didn’t repeat a lot, but it is uniquely beautiful so I got it anyway. It surprised me by repeating as well as other roses, and now your explanation makes perfect sense. Helen

You're welcome, Helen. Grow as many of them as you can make room for and can find. They're all gorgeous. When I started looking for them, only Sevilliana was readily available and only from Rose Acres, Muriel Humenick's marvelously esoteric collection up in the Gold Country. I wrote an article about them and Peter Schneider printed it. I received ONE response, from Ruby Buck, Dr. Buck's widow. She put me in touch with Kathy Zuzek who was at the University of Minnesota. We traded such neat stuff! She sent me all of the stippled types (and MANY others!) Gee Whiz, Spanish Rhapsody and Incredible are more dramatic and sibling seedlings.

Hi Kim, I too am very interested to try a stippled rose next spring. So I'm very excited to see that you've grown most, if not all, of the Buck stippled roses. I understand you are in a totally different climate than mine, but out of curiosity, which of those stippled cultivars you mentioned above is the most vigorous and floriferous for you? TIA! --Lin

Helen, thanks so much for such beautiful pictures of Freckles! In particularly, I really appreciate your calling out that phrase of "occasional repeat later in the season" being quite different from your own experience as I also saw that phrase and was a bit concerned about it. My biggest problem now is which cultivar should I go after because I don't have that much room (the universal problem shared by most rose lovers).

Hi Lin, I didn't have any issues with any of them, except Sevilliana, which rusted pretty badly here on the Central Coast. It was OK in the mid desert and in Los Angeles. It pretty much boils down to which one you like the looks of in photos. Gee Whiz and Incredible are the most "orange" while most of the others are in pink tones. Had I room and someone ELSE to keep them weeded, I would grow them all again here.

Thank you Kim for your input on these beauties! I think based on your description on colors, I can narrow my choices down to two, Freckles and Spanish Rhapsody, because I do slightly prefer an overall pinker blossom. Also, Helen's pictures of Freckles are so enticing! If I can't pick between these two, ha, I will just get both of them and see which one likes the NJ weather better :-D

Lin, last time I checked, Spanish Rhapsody is out of stock. So, you can have Freckles now and SR later ;) Helen

Hi Helen, I was browsing the blog by ProfessorRoush, who used to post on this Forum, and came across his summary of Buck roses. He tabulated the cultivars' physical characterizations, bloom frequency, and black spot resistance in his area. Freckles was assessed to have the best BS resistance (rated as 0 on his scale, with 0 -> 3 following increasing BS) with continuous bloom, while Gee Whiz and Incredible was rated as 1 on the BS resistance and "repeat consistently" (instead of continuous). Even with the understanding that ProfessorRoush gardens in Kansas, a very different climate from either CA or NJ, that table still bodes well for your Freckles! Great choice there!!

Freckles is now a must-have on my list for spring! I've been burned with unsuccessful attempts to overwinter pots in my unheated garage. So I hesitate to do it. Spring shipping is much safer for my zone 7.
