help! kitchen lighting!

I have 4 cans in the kitchen and I will have some sort of light hangin over island. Do I need a light (pendant or sconce)?

The house is contemporary mountain cabin. The kitchen is under the loft and the island will be half under the loft ceiling. The pendant lights will be wall mounted on the edge of that beam and hang over the island.

Any ideas on types of lights to try? Basically a hanging wall mounted pendant.

Kitchen layout has changed and sink is now under that window on the left. There is no cabinets on that side, only open shelves so I won’t have under cabinet lighting on that side, but I will have it in the right.

Light above window and sink like this. The cabinet design will be similar to Emily Henderson’s design here with the two glass cabinets going to the counter:

Post your 2d layout so we can see where the lighting should go. You do lighting so it lights the counters as you work.

So the layout of the island has changed. It’s now a 4x7 rectangle

We actually found a very thin under cabinet lighting system that could be installed under our open shelves. Find a really good lighting store for specs. It makes a wonderful difference in the task lighting of our kitchen.

just put a recessed can over the sink. tho it is a farmhouse it is also modern, and because it is a small space i wouldn't want it to get too busy with light fixtures. if not able to do a can I would do a very non-descript but pretty light over the sink and over the open shelves. I really think Tech lighting can get you there, they have plenty of pendants that adapt to their wall brackets and have thin cable. You dont need large scale here I think subdue would be better IMO

http://www.techlighting.com/Products/Fixtures/Wall-Collection/Clifton-Wall take a scroll through their inspiration pictures to get a feel for what I mean, i could also see not doing pendants at all and doing a directional light instead.

I like the idea of a sconce more than a pendant, especially if you’ll have another hanging fixture.

Also, I don’t think there is a “correct” flow for taking out food; I rarely go from fridge to sink. Everyone cooks different things, differently. I think people should design their kitchens for how they cook, and not solely based on general guidelines and best practices.

I agree about moving fridge if there is no sink in island. that is a huge mistake in the EH portland kitchen

I typically pull out a beverage and need a glass, maybe some ice --as do most guests, so the fridge makes better sense next to the dining area and near the sink than it does the walkway where it is now. Are you going to store glasses up there by the stove? Do you want others (family, guests, etc) going through your cook zone to grab a glass and get to the fridge? Do you want the fridge door open blocking the walkway? Your home looks beautiful btw. More space around the cooktop would be useful. Have I made a case for moving the fridge? :)

Look at the stage of construction; does it really look like major changes are feasible at this juncture? When someone posts a picture of their space with a specific ask, looking for other things to pull apart is not helpful; it just seems like you’re trying to show what you know. Or in this case, what you don’t know, which is anything about their storage plans or how they drink or cook. Trying to be helpful isn’t replying to posts without actually addressing the question asked, and instead pointing out possible issues (which are really best practices and a matter of personal preference) that likely can’t be fixed.
