If the ground is soggy at any time I don't think this species will work for you. It is native to hot, sunny, rocky places. If this is to go between the stones you've shown in other posts I am almost certain it'll fail. Direct sowing is even less likely to succeed than plants imo.

In Spring of last year I sowed seeds of creeping thyme and purple rock cress on the edges of a raised bed I had created with granite boulders. With the soil kept moist for a couple weeks, the thyme germinated easily and is covering much of the bed now. Only a couple rock cress plants grew, and at a much slower pace. I have moved them to a different raised bed.

The hard part is finding seeds for the varieties that are good for in-between stepping stones. Swallowtail Seeds has been a good source for me. Any culinary thyme will grow too large.

OP asks specifically about Thymus praecox which is a low, creeping species. But it needs sun and fast drainage.

Swallowtail Garden Seeds carries non-culinary low-growing thymes. I've bought Thymus serpellum Magic Carpet from them and it has been a fantastic creeping thyme and is doing very well between pavers. They also sell Mother-of-Thyme, but I think the Magic Carpet is shorter. Magic Carpet has certainly not grown beyond its 2" height. It's not the same species as the OP, but as a creeping thyme it might work. Have had great results and customer service from the company, too.

From all this I am guessing the thyme will not survive. The quart size plants were all on sale for $ 1 each. So worth an experiment. I will hold off on trying any seed and see if the plants make it.

On the opposite side I planted some Veronica repens yesterday. We shall see who survives the winter. I like the very fine scale of the thyme better: but coverage is more important.

I also bought creeping thyme seed from swallowtail. I start indoor and then transplant outside. 90% germinated without any issue.
