I would go for the one on the left, so it gives some contrast with the bricks and cabinets and paint the wall in a light grey-taupe color.

What might be an example for a light grey-taupe color that you're thinking of? ...to help us visualize. Thanks!

Are you keeping the wooden built-ins that are currently there? If so, I say go with the one on the right as they both have warm tones. If not, then I personally like the grayer one on the left, but I'm a fan of coastal/beach style :)

Either will look great, but each needs its own wall color.

For the sample on the left, consider B.M. Collingwood.

The sample on the right is so much like the cabinets, I would suggest you stay away from warm, creamy and lean toward something like B.M. Vale Mist

Add a rug which will work with walls and, most importantly, the floor it is on.

Tammy, we are keeping the built-ins as is for now. We're open to painting the brick fireplace though.

As a Taupe color I would choose Farrow and Ball - Elephant Breath.

It would give a fresher and more contemporary look

then you change the accent pillow and shade colors.

I would add also two mid-large size floor plants.
