exterior brick ranch help!

Hi, I am wanting to change the exterior of our ranch to make more modern. Paint the brick? Siding? Garage doors? We’ll take out the bay window and add a large flat window and we’ll take out the arched brick near the front door but any suggestions I’d LOVE! I tend to lean towards white painted brick, black windows and wood accents-thank you!!!

The brick is the only visually interesting and upper-grade finish on your entire house, and you want to slap $50 worth of paint on it. How does that make any sense?

There are cheap, flat panels of painted plywood on the sides of the garage--and they aren't your first target?

Your priority should be to improve the house, not just change it. Painting brick will likely lower the resale value of the house.

Your house in dominated by the huge snout garage, and nothing you do will change that. Anything you do to the house to make it 'modern' will always take a backseat to that garage. Fix that first.

Please don't paint the brick. I have no doubt you would regret it.

Your home isn't fancy but it's pleasant enough. The garage doors, however, are a bit dominant. You do have an attractive and well maintained yard. If you didn't have the tree -- which is a positive for your home -- I'd suggest you consider adding a front porch from the garage to the right corner of the home; however, I wouldn't cut the tree to create the porch..

Do consider creating either a smaller porch or arbor limited to over your front walkway -- all the way from (and the same width as) your front entry to the front wall of the garage.

Whatever finish or color you use for the posts for your new arbor or porch, you could also use it for the garage doors. Preferably not white. Choose a color from within the brick -- there is a shade of gray -- to paint your garage doors and garage door trim and the white boards on each side of the garage as well as the boards around that bay window. Doing that would blend your garage in with the rest of the home rather than having the garage doors be so dominant -- rather than have them "stick out like a sore thumb".

Thank you! Yep- we are going to make the front area a front patio once we take out the bay window! Thank you for great suggestions!

That brick pillar at the front of your front porch/stoop may be needed for structural purposes.

Another thing you might consider is enclosing your current stoop/porch as an entry (perhaps putting a French door where the entry door now is), and move your exterior front wall with entry door and adjacent windows out to what is now the edge of the concrete stoop/porch and adding a new porch in front of that. You could either make new porch roof a forward facing gable or a half gable connecting the roof slope/ridge with the with the ridge of the house and the ridge of the garage roof. That way, you could wrap the brick pillar and arched brick with drywall rather than remove them and create a place for a hall tree or hat rack and/or a bench, etc..

That’s a great idea! Nope- the pillar isn’t structural we had it checked out. Thank you!
