Really like ORB door. Maybe paint the FP the same color as the walls, replace the mantle and get a great piece of art for above it.

Restyling the mantel is what this fireplace really needs. All that stuff strung out from one end to the other provides no focal point and just looks like clutter.

Those objects on the mantle are just temporary while we get settled in to the house. Each object represents a person in my life that I care about. Totally temporary. Will restyle once I get the fireplace in order. Thanks for the feedback. I should have mentioned it in my post.

Like your choice of fireplace screen. Adding that after painting your white painted brick the same color as your wall will be a huge improvement. Also agree that your mantel could use a makeover as well. Consider removing the mantel you have and adding a fireplace surround with a mantel instead. You have a large area of brick so choose a larger surround -- something such as this painted white:

What is the purpose of adding these doors? Why not just a fireplace screen?

What is the rectangle above the fire box and behind the mantel? Maybe your wall would look good sans mantel, but with a large piece of art over the rectangle.

Eliminate the mantel, and stucco the entire brick area. If you can find an affordable craftsman, investigate Venetian plaster.

The mantel cutting across the herringbone inset looks odd. So, maybe you could consider eliminating the mantel entirely. The insert would be a perfect spot for a dramatic painting. Since the fireplace is pretty large I'm wondering if you painted it the same color as the adjoining walls that it might lessen it's impact. Whatever you decide - good luck!

I am trying to figure out exactly what material your mantle is made of...is it a reclaimed barn beam or hand-hewned? I can understand if you want to keep a one of a kind feature, but it appears too dark up against the stark white background. I would suggest trying to refinish the mantle, but I know reclaimed wood is difficult to modify.

Regarding the doors...the picture of the one you posted, I think once you see it in person you would not be happy with it. The manufacturers are using thin metals that look cheap and do not hold up over time. It looks like you are inspired by a more craftsman-style. I would look into a more custom hand-crafted piece. A reclaimed piece would be awesome but finding the exact dimensions would prove difficult. Do you have any local hearth/fireplace stores in your area?

Side note: Have you considered changing out your track lights to craftsman-style fixtures?

The mantle is reclaimed from a railroad but someone previously painted it dark brown. I think I will try to update the brick to something more modern. Than so for the advise.

Just to update everyone. I now have my design plan for the awkward fireplace. I probably won’t get it done until Spring but I will post a pic when I do.....for now, the plan is to remove the mantle, replace the doors, paint the fireplace darker, then buy a custom inlay for the herringbone area, and then I will style with area on each side. Think I will use something thin and long there. No mantle. Thank you for all your feedback. Sometimes pointing out the problems helps too. Thanks everyone.
