What happened to all the old posts?

I used to read and search old posts All. The. Time. Is the display messed up right now, or did Houzz really delete all the old posts? Right now I'm only getting 53 posts, two pages on the Antique Roses Forum.

Houzz, I am going to be really upset if our archive has been removed. I have never complained about the changed up until now, but this would be the last straw fr me. There is a rich wealth of information in our archives, and I do use it.

I definitely prefer the houzz format over all others, NGA as well as Facebook. Facebook is the worst actually. I like Houzz in that when I do a google search on a topic on houzz, I instantly get results from Houzz pertaining to the topic that i am searching particularly if it is a variety of flower. I can see pics and read posts regarding this particular rose or plant in a very easy to follow format. Whereas it is much more difficult to get the same results from NGA or Facebook. Sometimes a discussion of a particular flower is buried deep in a lengthy thread.

...I'm pleased to hear it was some sort of gremlins in the system, so hopefully it will be rectified... searching for old posts on google just isn't the same for me...

...I think this forum is advantaged by not having anyone really watching over you... they tend to leave us to our own devices...so if you want to go o/t about something, providing it isn't inflammatory, then most people don't mind too much.... it tends to moderate itself here... you don't feel too guilty about it if you want to talk about your pets or somesuch…

Well, it looks like they fixed something, but only only those sites they deemed "important". The rose propagation forum is still only left with 39 entries only going back to 2015.

The strength of Gardenweb, IMHO, has always been that is it relatively unmoderated. Back in the Dark Ages, there definitely were Thought Police who tried to control what was said about roses. Since Spike moderated for civility and commercialism, but let civil, on topic discussion go where it may, the Thought Police were never a big factor in GardenWeb. However, that is the vibe I get from NGA. That there are people there who would try to shout down certain types of rose talk that does not agree with the party line.

Totally agree about the lack of policing...even here there are some forums where "pros" hang out and downright scary to post. Newbies fee after getting told what they can like!! Peope end up flagging every other post.

    Sheila:

I am thankful that someone here is less of a fan of “smiles“ and emojis than I. Though you did not also mention !!!, nor assertions of laughing audibly to one‘s self.

I would be interested to see an example of thought police type activity by the moderator at nga. I haven’t seen it, though I haven’t been there much.

I will say that it seems to have a lower percentage of substantive discussions than what is found here. That is why I don’t check it out that often.

It is definitely not as active a sight as this one here. More pictures less words. I believe Beth is posting there now. Of course I can edit my post over there!!! LOL! There is one emoji that I actually like cuz it just cracks me up and that is the Tipping the Hat. I don't know why that one gets. I mean who thought of it? I have seen one post erase there but I have to say I was happy to see it gone. Extremely nasty.

    Really!!

    Which one?

This is all very interesting, but what is NGA? Thanks, and sorry for my ignorance. Diane

    NGA=National Gardening Association = Garden.org

    National Garden Association.

I preferred this forum, because it is specifically directed at Antiques and Shrubs, whereas that is just "ROSES."

But I have to admit that this insult to the community dismays me.

I do believe the archives are returning, Jeri. I checked just now and over 7000 Tea discussions are back thankfully.

It took me a while to figure out NGA and feel comfortable there but it never felt unfriendly to me. And I've never witnessed a moderator censoring anything. They talk about any and everything from what I've seen. There is a rose specific forum but even there there doesn't seem to be any censorship. The moderator on the rose forum is really terrific and KNOWS her stuff about ROSES!

I've joined a couple of different rose pages on FB but so far it's not much discussion but mostly just photo posting. And at that half the time the poster doesn't know or post the rose name (arrrrgh!). I just don't get the same family of rose fiends, oops,I mean friends, on FB that I do on a forum.

All of the Rose propagation posts are back! Yay! But why did they take them away in the first place? What sort of glitch does that?

I'm going to assume it was a bug, and somehow it was missed. Some years ago I worked for a company that did installs that sometimes turned out rather differently than we envisioned, and had to be tweaked after they went live. We never meant it to happen, and I doubt Houzz did either.

There have been such "glitches" on HMF, too, where all the old photos disappeared after one "update". "Poop" happens...unfortunately.

I appreciate that link, rifis. Very impressive. I would love to see Houzz provide it's Garden Web members with that kind of information.

My wish is that Houzz would return the photos from years past.

Many pictures all over the internet disappeared when the initially basically free photo hosting sites like Flickr started charging for their services. If a user didn’t pay for continuing to use the site, all their pictures over a certain limit disappeared from the hosting site, and consequently everywhere they had posted them. No fault of Houzz, HMF or any other site. If you uploaded directly from your computer, your pictures are still there. So in many old threads you see some pictures and some grey squares or codes.

Houzz may have restored ability to access “latest” discussions beyond page 1, but the “popular”, “featured” and “unanswered” categories still cannot be accessed beyond page 1. All attempts to do so bring up “latest” discussions.

    Any response, Emily H?

Sounds like we are getting there. I'll check this part out!

SEIL NOTED: "I've joined a couple of different rose pages on FB but so far it's not much discussion but mostly just photo posting. And at that half the time the poster doesn't know or post the rose name (arrrrgh!). "

*** arrrgh! Indeed! Maybe I'm just getting crabby in my old age, but I lose interest in a "pretty" photo, if the name of the rose isn't there. (Unless, of course, they're posting to ask if anyone knows what it is.)

I'm looking, I guess, for some information or questions about a rose -- not just an "art shot".

Jeri and Seil, I'm definitely getting crabby in old age. I am suffering from photo overload right now. Those of us who don't post photos as much are left as commenters for long lists of posted photos that have little or no text accompanying them. I'm not talking about Facebook, either, to which I don't belong. Diane

Emily, finally i can type for a month [seems like ages] i could not but i can only do emojis and at times i can type one word before it gets eaten up. I hope the updates do not effect any of us bec it really getting so frustrating. i still cant used my mobile phone but i can do this on my computer. any suggestions besides logging out and resigning in [many, many times] . Everything is up to date so i don't understand whats is the problem. Thanks !

gdinie, that is exactly right. There is a fix that I used for another forum on another computer that worked. I posted it a couple of years ago and it worked for some pics here, but not all depending on the original hosting site. I'll see if I can find it.

I think few people use the Rose Gallery Forum exclusively, but cross-post to the RF and/or ARF.. I really appreciated that forum as it focused on the flower, whereas the others are more conversational about the rose itself. I think it's a result of the newer cross-poting prompts or maybe the fact that those forums get little traffic. Recently, I've begun cross-posting, especially anything propagation related.

Glad you can post Jin. Hopefully, I can edit on my phone, as well. Not holding my breath there! : ((

It looks to me that the older post are back online..... my guess is that houzz updated their server and brought over the newer post first.... so the old post did not show up until the other server was brought back on line.... there are so many post houzz probably has multiple servers.... or they could have been splitting their server....

But I think the post are now there.....

My notifications also seem messed up, not getting them and they are sporadic.

If they are there, where are they?

I found post back to 2017.... 5000 pages.....

Can anyone post pictures at the moment? I haven't been able to post any pictures on my thread. Very frustrating.

    . Testing.

Not a problem from my phone. I do not use the app.

    Testing...phone, not app.

    Thanks Vapor!

Umm, I've been using my laptop for posting pictures directly on the website. I wonder why that would make a difference? The posting process seems to always get stuck in the final submission click.

Thanks Rekha! Ok, so both of you are using your phones. I wonder if that's the reason you could go through with the submission.....

..this is from a laptop.... just something I made earlier....

THAT, looks absolutely heavenly! :-). Thank you Marlorena!

So there is something glitchy with the interface on my laptop (Mac Pro) and Houzz then. But my attempt to post a pic on my phone just now failed as well. Maybe it's just my account?

For the last week or so I have not been able to post pictures with my phone. I do not use the app. I am ok via the computer, but I don’t download my phone pictures there. Very frustrating. I will try again in another post, so this one at least doesn’t disappear.

Nope, disappeared. I will try a tiny picture now.

That worked. So I have to re-size my pictures. That has just become a lot easier with the new iOS update, so I guess that is what I will have to do.

Hey that worked for you!! Please gdinieontario, do tell me how you resize your picture. Sorry I'm not very tech-savvy....

To be clear: I don’t have to permanently resize my pictures, but once I have chosen a picture, it asks in what size I want to load it. A great improvement.

    AHA! That worked!!

My teenage son showed me a way to reduce the size of a pic (told you I'm not tech savvy).

Thank you all for helping me to resolve my picture-posting problem! Now back to my post I go to add pics.

    Thank you all!

    We cross-posted gdinieontario!

I haven't upgraded my iOS, but what my son told me to do was pretty similar in gist - send the pics of interest to myself in an email and choose the smaller size for the enclosures.

Thank you so very much for helping me to solve this issue!

How to do that on your phone or your camera also. But I don't know if you can do it once you take higher-resolution picture.

Hi Vapor - all my pics on my phones were high res. But when you choose some of them to send via email, the phone (the older iOS) would ask you which size you would like the enclosures to be. While the recipient of the email will have the pics in low res, my originals remain high res. So it won't be an issue. Don't know about the new iOS because I haven't upgraded my phone yet.

    Good idea.

    last modified: 6 years ago

I had read about sending the pictures to yourself, but I was just not willing to do that, tbh. If you upgrade to iOS 13, you can do it while you are posting, like with an email, and your original remains the same size. See screen shot at bottom. I had chosen the picture, and at the bottom you can choose to change the size for downloading.

And here it is, size small:
