Kitchen lighting - peninsula with down-draft extractor

We are renovating our kitchen and the plan is to have a peninsula with the hob and a sink on it. The hob (Faber Galileo) has a built in down-draft extractor which means there will be no extractor fan/light above the stove. The peninsula will be double depth (120cm) and the intention is to place pendants over the back half of the peninsula (so not to be ruined by being placed above the hob). There will be an appliance wall 130cm behind the island. The appliance wall is 2m wide. We were thinking of having one section of 2-4 down lights (2 in front of the appliances and possibly 2 over the front part of the peninsula over the stove side). When we had an extractor fan / lights directly above the hob my husband regularly used the lights and is worried that we won't have enough light over the hob if we don't have at least one down light directly above the stove.

If you have a stove with a down draft extractor, what have you done for lighting? What would you do differently if you could do it again? Is it enough to have lighting in the general area or should we really have at least 1 or maybe 2 downlights directly above the hob?
