Help Needed with dining room MESS

I don't know what is going on..... I lost my posting from a few weeks ago and I am now having trouble posting again. Ugh.

Okay, I have a great room where all of the lighting fixtures are aligned from the living to the dining to the kitchen area. My major problem is that the dining area is narrower.

Some background:

· the total length (from couch table to island) is 19'6". Accounting for aisle by island and front door, this becomes around 13'6".

· the width is 14'5".

· each cabinet is 20" deep and my round table is 48" diameter.

· there is 58" clearance to the tall cabinet but only 31" clearance to the buffet cabinet

· my chandelier is 31" diameter and is mounted 36" above the table with the ceiling at 10'6"

Question 1: Should I center the chandelier width wise so that it is about 45" from each cabinet? This will no longer align with the other ceiling fixtures but brings better balance to this area.

Question 2: Any recommended size/shape/style/color of dining set that will go better with the chandelier? What do you all think about a counter height dining set so that I can raise the chandelier?

I LOVE this chandelier but feel like it is my FIRST mistake. I really don't want to make a SECOND mistake in picking a wrong dining set. Any photos will be especially appreciated.

THANKS!!!!!

I am not an interior decorator, but a realtor who helps people stage their homes to sell. With that as my background, I do not think you should recenter your chandelier. I think the problem is that the buffet takes up too much visual mass in the room. If the buffet were removed, the area would serve more like a walkway between the kitchen and family room. I also would definitely go with a rectangular table that seats 6-8, which would take up less width than your 48" round table.

IMO the whole space is a bit of a mess your have mixed stuff that really does not work together like the white console table I like your art but it is getting lost with all the dark heavy furniture I also find the floors really don’t work with your furniture . What are the floors in the LR.I do agree the buffet is too overpowering in the space take away all the pieces in the DRthen decide how big a table you want and place that centered under the light then figure out what you have space for it is hard to tell but you might need to hang the chandeleir in a different spot but the table comes first to see that too.No counter height table most people do not like sitting on a stool for a dinner and with all that dark wood I would be looking at a chandeleir that is not wood.

You are correct that lighting is an issue. It has nothing to do with pendants. There is not enough ambient light. And there are too many light absorbing large things, and clashing colors.

Ditch the buffet, and a few other too large and too brown pieces, and the for sure the clashing gray tile. Move the art down to the human scale. Get rid of any accessory smaller than a soccer ball. Add about 10 recessed lights. Reevaluate.

Wow, thanks for the comments. My husband says that the easiest thing to do is SELL the house! This house is a new build (not custom) and we bought it as is, which is why I'm struggling to make things work. And we downsized by 33% from our last house. The gray tile is throughout the house, there is no living room (just behind the white table), we have tons of light (E/W in Tucson AZ), and a lots of recessed lights. In our last house, I had more separation between our Asian horse and SW art but now have tried to integrate the two.
I do see now that the buffet is in the walkway but that wall is our only wall long enough in the great room except the TV wall. I can get rid of the white table, move the TV cabinet behind the couch and move the buffet to be a TV cabinet.

So, no counter height or brown table. A rectangular table probably around 72-80 long. Color or style ideas? I just bought the chandelier so I would like to keep it.

I would go with 36"" wide rectangular table. And get a rug to cover floor that out of balance with furniture. Could you switch buffet and hutch?

From what I've been reading, I should have a 40-42" wide table for the 31" chandelier? The buffet can only be switched with the TV console. Our East wall is primarily windows.

My first thought was a rectangular table would look nice. Can we see a picture of the wall with pine armoire on it?

Yep, here is a photo of the east wall with the pine cabinet. Its morning so very bright out (room is not dark)

thanks celerygirl, I was thinking along those lines. but isn't the table more brown to add to all my brown furniture? here's one similar that I found and another that I liked

Sweet, loved how you did that! Can you share the links for the dining set and rug!
    Thanks so much!

Wow that looks great! Your side board/buffet is interesting. Whats the story behind it? It looks like it has one......

Do you like the open concept of your kitchen? I’m not an open concept fan so I might explore putting the buffet in front of the island to separate the two areas and so you could not see the kitchen clutter.

The buffet is really an upended top to what is now the TV cabinet. We bought the TV cabinet for a 6' fish tank of my daughter's (that didn't last too long, as normal for kids). Didn't want the top but it came with the only 6' cabinet. It's not difficult to find furniture like that in Arizona!

And it's just the two of us now and we try to stay out of the kitchen so it stays pretty neat. Boy, but when my chinese husband cooks those hot peppers! Whoo whee, better step outside.

I found a another table that I really like. It has chairs in the matching wood rather than these. it is 42x76. what do you all think? Possible?
