I’d love to decorate this area for holloween, but do dat everything I tried looks cheap and tacky. I’ve seen beautiful glass pumpkins and velvet ones. Thoughts?

Halloween is a fun holiday where pumpkins are carved and/or painted silly colors. It’s not supposed to be artful or tasteful. Cut some faces into a couple pumpkins, scatter some gourds and Indian corn, put candy out, have fun, and that’s about it.

(the only velvet I see on Halloween are those black spiders you can hang on a string from your ceiling, or tack onto the wall)

I am sure the Martha Stewart website has some ideas if you want to decorate tastefully for Halloween.

Lots of velvet pumpkin ideas on Pinterest. I might slip a couple small (real $1.50 each) pumpkins in spaces for the fall color.

Put one of those big warty pumpkins on the left side of the counter and call it a day!

Anglophile - I changed out my dishes and platters in my glass-doored cabinets for seasons/holidays, as I’m sure many other Houzzers do.

    Your vignette already looks beautiful!

I'm in New England. One of my favorite looks (above doors, on window sills, on rock walls, etc.) is a line of small (real) pumpkins. A quick search brought up lots of ideas to incorporate mini pumpkins.

Good luck and please post pictures of what you do!

Thank you to everyone which has kind, constructive and helpful suggestions!!! This area is off the kitchen. Our library does a holiday walk fundraiser and I have enjoyed seeing others decorate their cabinets. Why would you have glass cabinets and then not use it to display something that brings joy? I also love touring model homes which are staged to perfection and have beautifully curated cabinets. If only I had their design talent. This is something I enjoy! Certainly no need to criticize me for it.

Chispa- I LOVE those big warty pumpkins! I’ll pick one up tomorrow and post a picture.

Oldbat2be- I ❤️ a line of real pumpkins too! I have small (real) white ones on my mantel. Thanks for posting some inspirational pictures!

I love decorating for each holiday too! I toyed with doing my glass uppers but it was way too many pumpkins. Hubs said I had enough already. Lol Anyway I see you have the tiered tray, I decorated mine with various things. I also did a pumpkin tray on my island. And I did a mix of velvet and glitter pumpkins in my dining room.

KR-I love your pictures and how you put everything together. Can I ask where you found the velvet pumpkins? I may be too late for this year. I stopped at Michael’s and Marshall’s today but didn’t see any.

Target did still have smaller ones last week! I got the big ones from Etsy though.

If you want more elegant, you could paint out your big warty pumpkin or one of the Cinderella squash/pumpkins with gold paint :-) You could get some velvet at a fabric store and make your own. So many beautiful colors of velvet; you could have exactly what you want. Looks pretty easy and lots of instructions on youtube/pinterest:

I'm sure you can find tons of ideas on Pinterest if you haven't already looked there. But honestly, I'd go to your local garden center or farm (not sure where you live), and pick up a bunch of different pumpkins you like. Or some small gourds and fill a glass hurricane. Or take the moss orbs off those candlesticks and replace with pumpkins! There's an interior designer named Eddie Ross who just held a workshop on decorating pumpkins and he used brass thumbtacks to give them a little flare. I'm pretty sure he painted them as well, you could probably google images for that.

My vignette runs more Halloween-creepy and less autumn.

Garlands were probably from Michael's, as were the LED candles and black roses. The skull may have been from WorldMarket. The cat was a thrift store find that was originally white that I spray painted black and added the red glitter eyes.

I made a Witch's cabinet out of my hutch for a party. Poison apples, potion bottles, couple rats, black lace, black webbing stretched about. Then it was were desserts were put for the party. Velvet pumpkins at Hobby Lobby and Jo Ann Fabrics.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Olychic- I wish I were a DIYER. I have so much admiration for crafty people. I tend to start projects, get overwhelmed and then don’t finish them.

Check out Homegoods, TJ maxx or Marshalls. They might have some left. I picked up some gorgeous mercury glass pumpkins in bronzes and rose gold.

I was just in home goods today and they had tons of them still!

Sorry the lighting is bad. Seeing these pictures makes me want to take out the mirror and do the same backsplash as the kitchen.

I love the velvet pumpkins! You found lots of colors. I didn’t realize it was a mirror until you pointed it out, I thought it was a pass thru!
