Need makeup help

I'm confused about face powders and I need help. This is what I use either alone or on top of foundation (CC Cream), and blush on top.

A friend tried my powder and wants something similar but she can't afford the price of Too Faced. Although the powder is pressed, it's translucent and you can't tell you're wearing powder, it's that nice.

I told her I'd find powder similar to mine, but after looking, I'm totally confused. "Poreless Powder" can be bought, but what type of powder, finishing or setting? The color needs to be translucent and able to be worn without foundation.

Any suggestions for a low cost powder like Too Faced? It's the best stuff ever made, it's not your mom's powder. :)

Do you need powder? I gave up face powder around 40 years old and have not used it for the last 15 years.

This article might interest your friend, Oakley. If I were shopping for powder, I would try the Coty or NYX ones. I've had good luck with NYX products and they're so affordable I can risk buying without trying. Currently, I have a jar of Cover FX setting powder but I never use it. (I'm not a big makeup user but I do have pretty much everything I could need if I were.)

ETA: I suspect 'finishing' and 'setting' are interchangeable marketing terms. Check the ingredients to see what's different.

Ok, just reread your post: what's the point of powder without foundation?

I use Clinique's face powder in translucent without foundation. I barely wear any make up (under eye concealer, liner and mascara). I just find it is enough of a layer to make me look finished (a little less shiny and sort of done without looking done up - if htat makes sense). It is a loose powder, so not sure if it's what you want, but I've used it for years and really like it.

ETA: not sure about price compared with yours, but my jar lasted me a solid 2 years, maybe 3.

If you haven’t worn it in a long time there are a lot of new products out there that have come a long way. They have different functions, they’re not all powders, and one could spent hours reading up and researching which ones to try based off what you’re looking to achieve. I haven’t worn colored powder on my face in years either and only focus on under eyes or t zone with any of the new ones.

These days I sometimes use NYX HD Finishing powder under my eyes. Just a tiny knocked off the brush amount though or you can end up with white. I don’t think this mention is the answer though to the pressed powder talked about here.

Oakley I just did some quick searching and didn’t see anything suggested for a dupe. You could check out YouTube and see if anyone has found one but I suspect this is just one of those good products you have to buy full price. That TF product has been on my long list of ‘try it sometime‘ but I like Benefit’s Porefessional face primer pressed into my t zone before liquid foundation. Sadly, I’ve never found a dupe for it despite all the claims online of this or that product. None compared.

Here’s a link with helpful info. about the names.

    Go to minute 10:52

I used to wear foundation and a tad bit of pressed powder. Foundation alone was heavy and in the summer I'd sweat it off.

If I don't need to be fully made up to do errands or when I know someone is dropping by, it takes two seconds to put this powder on and voila!

Read the reviews in the Sephora link above. This reviewer said it well:

"I live where it is triple digit heat & this seems to hold up."

And as I said, your face doesn't feel like it has makeup on.

Tartan, the talc was for genital use. I think a family recently won a big lawsuit against J&J because the wife/mother used it and she died of cancer.

I'm too lazy to edit. Bunny, this is nothing like the powder from days of old. I think it's great for older skin because it evens out the skin tone without having to use concealer on various spots on the face.

Oakley read the article Tartan linked. I've known about the talc/baby powder/ genital use for close to 20 years. My sister died from ovarian cancer which she believed was related to baby powder use throughout her life - it wasn't, she was brca positive. This article is about new information (to me) related to talc and mesothelioma. I wonder if the legal council for J&J or any of the makeup companies which are likely to be dragged into this would want their teenage daughters using products with talc. I'm guessing no.

I use Laura Mercier translucent setting powder with Maybelline BB cream.

I'm a very white person so all I use is Glowkit by Anastasia of Beverly Hill. Brush it on lightly and I look like a person who's healthy lol.

Yaya, what color glow kit do you use? My friend is also very white and had to put extra mascara on to be noticeable. Also, what parts of the face do you use the powders for?

Andie, LM products are nice but too pricey for my friend.

DLM, I'll definitely read the article, thanks!

That was a good article. Here's an easy to read article going into more depth about talc in makeup. My gosh, it's in all the makeup I wear! lol I probably wear makeup a couple of times a week, not too much really, and because I have asthma, I never ever inhale any.

It seems the culprit is inhaling the powder and the packed powder doesn't dust up. I also knock off extra blush and mascara powder from the brushes before I apply it.

The FX talc free brand might be my next purchase. Too bad they're so expensive.

If bad talc gets in the eye's you'll have an immediate reaction. So far so good.

I had no idea this category on youtube even existed. If you need me, you'll know where I'll be. :)

    Empties

I use Lancome Dual Finish either by itself every day or else over foundation if I am dressed up. But it's also in the price range of your powder. I've never found a more affordable version, so I've always just bought it.

Thanks for sharing that Drugwatch article, Oakley. Very informative!

Empty videos are my favorites! It shows products that they actually used enough to use up and they will tell you how they liked them!

Maybe you do a google search for drugstore dupe for the powder that you like. I don't use a powder for foundation so I don't have any recommendations for you. I've always just used a loose translucent that doesn't give any coverage.

One thing to consider about the high price is that the powder compact will likely last her for a year or maybe even more. Might seem high, but in the long run, it's not all that much considering how long it will last.

If only there were more product videos featuring older women who actually LOOK like older women. I don't care how products look on and work for women in their 30s and 40s. (YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!!! ... I know. That's what I sound like.)

And yes, I know there are a FEW (such as Angie Hot and Flashy), but by and large they have had work done or have won the genetic lottery, so it's not really a matter of the products being anything special.

it's not really a matter of the products being anything special.

You got it, IdaClaire. Absolutely no miracle products out there. Honestly, ime, makeup looks good on really good skin. My skin is better than average for my age but it's still not optimal for makeup. I have a good friend who's a professional makeup artist (Hollywood, not Sephora) and even she couldn't find me a concealer that looked good under my eyes and covered my dark circles. When it comes to makeup, a lighter hand is really best as I get older.

That said, there are some YouTubers with videos of women over 50. Lisa Eldridge has a done a few. Pixiwoo and AlyArt (she's an amazing makeup artist who seems to want to be a singer but I digress) have made up their mums and they looked fabulous. I'll do a quick search because the over 50 YouTubers aren't coming to mind. :P

This might help your friend, https://www.clinique.com/product/1599/61087/makeup/foundations/almost-powder-makeup-broad-spectrum-spf-18?shade=01_Fair

The buy-in is a little steep, but not by today's $$ standards. It lasts forever if she can stand to pay the $30.

I'm mid-50s and this compact, I'm finding is my favorite. A few tips though: A light hand and application is KEY. I use a fluffy blush brush (not the sponge that comes with it--just don't use that, throw it away in fact because she will apply too much with it) and not a foundation brush either to apply very lightly, as if putting on a light dusting--nothing more. Anything more at an older age and you just ruined your look and now you look 100. Very light application--can't stress that enough. Then a tiny bit of blush or bronzer in the usual areas and done. Mascara helps too.

I'm very fair and I use the 05 Medium shade as I can handle a slight amount of color in spite of being 100% white (had my dna checked) and being blonde. She could probably go one shade lighter and I'm going to try the lighter shade when I run out of this compact, but it doesn't run out, so it will be at least a year before I get the chance. I know you asked for translucency, but I go from looking not well without this, to healthy and even complected with just a teeny tiny dusting of this stuff. You can't see it. At all. I just look like me, but better. Pores disappear and skin tone is evened out. As long as the less is more principal is used.

I too can't use concealer like tartanemeup says. I've tried the best and nope. I look 110 with it. I use this powder lightly to dust over and under eye area (I use a light eye cream prior) and it evens the darkness splotches just enough. I'm not going for that white-out look around my eyes. I'm older now and I'm ok with it this fact.

I do use the Clinique toner daily https://www.clinique.com/product/1573/15501/3-step/step-2-exfoliate/clarifying-lotion-1 after cleansing and it does get all the rough cells off, prepping the skin for a smooth pallet (and it makes pores disappear somehow). After that, I apply my serum, then a few dots of a moisturizer, wait for that to set, then dust with the powder. It takes all of a couple minutes start to finish. I mention the skin care routine because I find at my age (and probably your friend too) it does make a difference if one is going to wear make up. I didn't wear make up for years because as I aged, I looked ridiculous with it and it made me look older than I was. 2019 was the year I got tired of looking like I crawled out from under a rock and tried many different light foundations and powders. The Clinique powder foundation, to my surprise works for me. Hope that helps.

Not sure how old Stephanie Marie is in the video above, but to me she's at least 40. If the product I'm interested in doesn't have to do with fine lines and wrinkles, I'll watch videos from anybody.

I'm not saying this to brag because I'm giving an honest to goodness product review because of recent compliments I've received.

Last week a couple of people told me at separate times "You look so pretty!" I later realized it wasn't my hair they were complimenting because they would have said so. But my hair did look good due to a couple of new products I won't live without. :)

I've been using many different brands for fine lines and wrinkles for years, just like most older women. I recently turned 65.

The past two months I've been using two new anti-aging products, morning and night, because I ran out of the Neutrogena Hyaluronic acid gel, which I liked but I never really saw a difference.

I needed product with H.A. so I did a lot of research and I was NOT going to spend a lot of money either. Been there done that and no difference. I bought two products for my face, both with good reviews.

Dickinson's Enhanced Witch Hazel, Hydrating Toner with Rosewater. This particular toner also has H.A. in it. I always use Witch Hazel anyway but not with the other ingredients. Rose water helps the skin also.

When the toner is dry, I use Ebanel Retinol Moisturing Cream with H.A., with other good ingredients.

So I'm using a double dose of the H.A. and moisturizing my face at the same time. Less product to use and it's fast to put on.

I'm sold and I am DONE searching for something better! lol
