No I have never experienced a contractor putting in a sink that I had no knowledge of.....I'm being snarky, but really this all goes back to the design of the cabinet layout. If your sink base is 27" and you have changed from an over mount to under you reduce sink size. Counters and sink are in so this is a done deal. Live and learn. Unless you want to rip out your entire kitchen and start over.

The contractor isn't your designer. In this case, you were the designer. A "usual" sink base is 36 inches, You have only 27 inches. You'll live with it, or go out and buy a drop in, and re do the counter, or see if the fabricator can re cut on site.

What did the contractor mean by "that's the correct size"? Correct size for what?

Who specified the sink size?

Who did the kitchen and cabinet plans and layout?

What did the work contract specify for the sink?

Who designed the kitchen? Who chose the sink?

I have a 26'' cabinet with a 24'' sink - did they explain why they couldn't put a larger one in?

Ugh, I am so sorry. We currently have a temporary 21 inch drop in sink and it is really tiny. I hope that you’re able to find some sort of solution to get more space to work. :(

I kept my original cabinets and I told the person I bought sink from that I had a 27 inch base sink and he told me he had a sink for me and said this is the standard size for my base. 21 inches is the bowl size. I previously had laminate countertops with an over mount sink that had a 25 inch bowl and also bigger from to back to front

My co tractor is not my designer but they should oversee everything and make sure that you are getting the proper size sink with your base cabinet measurements. They are the experts. Why wouldn’t I go larger if I could have?

An undermount sink has a rim that has to fit inside the cabinet: vs an overmount/ drop in sink where the bowl can be as large as the cabinet because the rim of the sink is outside of the cabinet resting on the countertop.

21" is a prep sink size. Not a full sink. If your cabinet is 27" you can have the sink removed, the hole recut and a larger sink installed.

Yes I can but it could jeopardize the stone by remove it a recutting it and the faucet hole is already there so they would have to move hole more foward and it’s to close to edge.

And it will cost me an extra $1000 to recut but no guarantee that stone could be compromised. Then that would cost me an extra $3000 to get a new piece of stone. It’s Cambria... very expensive!

I'd suggest finding out your internal cabinet dimensions, shopping around for a sink yourself with rim dimensions that fit within that, and then once you find one you like, checking that with your contractor to make sure he's comfortable installing it in your kitchen. Do you have your countertops already or are you putting in new ones? If you're putting in new ones, you might have the option of slipping the rim up over the top of the cabinet edges before the countertop goes in. That's what we're doing in order to get a 29" double sink into a 30" base cabinet.

My OWN sink is Blanco in a galley kitchen. It measures 18 x 18 INSIDE with a 10 inch depth. It has been there for 15 years and there is NOTHING I can't make, or clean up. Nothing. I did it on purpose, to gain counter space.

I suggest you probably just replaced tops, when a fuller kitchen re do may have been in order. We don't know. Either way? Your contractor doesn't select your sink, He is a tech not a designer. YOU do the selecting, or you get a designer. . Move on, and enjoy the new tops. Your faucet holes will dictate that......unless you re do in total.

"He told me he had a sink for me" is a red flag. Sorry this happened to you.

Seems to me you need something like the now discontinued Ikea Domsjo to maximize that sink cabinet. If someone screwed up the cuts, this style sink looks forgiving...

I once bought a 30" sink, and they delivered and installed a 24" sink while I wasn't there. Was for a flip, but I was still flaming mad. I make guys modify the cabinets all the time to get in larger sinks, so I'd have been squeezing a 25" sink into your 27" base, for sure. But that had to be figured out before; as you say, it's a big financial risk now, so learn to work with it!

@ E A - do not slip the edges of the sink on top of the cabinets - the counters will not like that and neither will the fabricators - you will need to cut the sides of the cabinet for that - we do it all the time

1000 bucks to enlarge the sink hole and make another hole for the faucet?? come on. that's ridiculous. It's quartz. it can be recut without any issue. prob take 15 mins.

worse comes to worse, you could always do a drop in sink, that way the inside of the rim won't have to be finished or polished.

call in someone else to do it.

You can undermount a 27" sink into a 27" cabinet, no problem. I do it all the time.

You bought the Sink. The contractor installed What you bought. No it’s not his job to question what you bought. It would of been nice For sure. and the fabricator cut your quartz according to the size sink you bought. Like Beth said, quartz can be recut. they don’t remove it to do that.

We have 27" base and fit a Houzzer Eston sink from HD. it's only 21.5" bowl width but it's 19" front to back and 9" deep. My foodie wife loves it.

As an architect with 30 yrs experience, I have a 21-1/2" undermount 16 gauge single bowl in my own kitchen, and its perfect. Still large enough to clean broiler pans, cookie sheets, and large pans with long handles. The dishwasher does it job as the 'smaller' sink size keeps you disciplined to get the dishes into the dishwasher. Smaller sinks also give a bit more counterspace. With the smalller sink cabinet at 28" , makes more efficient use of the adjoining cabinet bases. To each his own.

This post is over five years old - I think that the OP has either moved on or changed out the sink by now.

An undermount single bowl with a 21" interior width can often be strap mounted with a Hercules strap in a 24" sink base. It provides enough functional space to wash kitchen equipment. You not only get more counter space with that size sink, you get added base cabinet width for wider drawer cabinets.
