Brick House Needs Makeover

last modified: 7 years ago

What can I do to update the exterior of my very basic house? Ignore the landscaping, it’s about to get ripped up. Thinking of painting the door black and adding shutters for the windows, but not sure about shutters on the large arch windows. Any thoughts or ideas?

Also, wondering if we should just scrap the brick color altogether and do a wash, although it would be difficult to get my husband on board.

I couldn’t get the picture loaded to the first one so I started over.

We don’t have much of a plan yet, just a goal to rip it out and start over soon! Landscaping ideas welcome too!

No shutters. Good landscaping would transform the house.

In order to assess foundation landscape possibilities, you need pictures that show a complete scene, including surroundings, but from not too far away. Keep the camera in line with the center of the house, but move 40% closer to it. Then, take a series of slightly overlapping photos that pan from far left to far right, showing all the way to the left and right lot lines.

Move closer and in line with the front door and take a picture of the whole entrance area.

Move farther away from where the above picture was taken and take another picture that shows the whole front yard and how it relates to the street.

Regarding the brick, I can't see anything objectionable about it.

The concept "rip it out and start over" bothers me. You have several large shrubs that are appropriately placed but need trimming. Replacing them with teeny new guys makes no sense. To improve your landscape, start with the good bones that you have and add perennials, annuals (in season of course) and a couple of small trees. Okay, rant over.

    Not a Pro.

It's a great house! I don't think you need shutters, or need to white wash the brick. I think you should put the money into getting your home professionally landscape. Like said @laceyvail 6A, WV " Good landscaping would transform the house"

I am also not sure if the door painted black is a good idea. It may look cave like in there and not really be seen. I could be wrong, but I paint the door last, after all is done. You may change your mind on the color.

If you post close ups of the shrubs they can be identified. Then people can advise on whether they're worth pruning correctly and keeping.

From what we can see now, not a single shrub is enhancing the house except possibly the two dark green ones at the far right section of the house. But without a better picture, even that is not certain. Among the landscaping elements the house needs are some small trees to the far left and right, but again, we need to see what lies on either side.

IMO if you want to instantly devalue your house paint the brick. No shutters either. Buut I do think a good landscpe architect could do wonders with the curb appeal. I would not do a black door since it is in a dark hole to begin with. After those shrubs by the entry are removed I would add 2 large planters one on either side of the door with seaonal plantings with lots of color and if that walkway is not from the street thta would be mu first thing to address and that will also add a place for more colorful plantings.
