We finally made the bottom of our backyard more useful. Our lot is 8400+ sq ft with a large slope in the back. Scope of work from our local contractor included:

-Demo retaining walls and planter, concrete pad

  • Installation of 70+ linear feet of interlocking block wall, pavers, drainage, turf. Clear side area and front door area and fill with gravel

DIY: Toja grid pergola

  • Brackets from Toja
  • Posts sourced from Lowe's and local lumber yard for the 12 ft pieces
  • Trellis brackets Simpson Strong Tie from Home Depot
  • Coolaroo shade fabric cut from rolls purchased on Amazon

Seating Set and Water fountain: Wayfair
Dining Set: Ikea
Market Umbrella: Costco

It looks much better. Are you going to add plantings to the back slope to stabilize? A few planters to soften up the new wall would look great.

Cindy, we have some existing plantings embedded that help the slope and we've been here a few years with significant rain and it's held up. With that said, we are going to try something low maintenance in the future and try til fill it up with some larger succulents and grasses. I like the idea of some planters against the wall.

laceyvail 6A, WV:It works for us, since we wanted something low maintenance and have a whole huge slope of dirt behind it to fill with plantings at some point. We now have a place to put our trash cans out of sight, previously we had to drag it to the other side of the house for parties where there is no front yard access.

Think unstructured plants like ornamental grasses that will add movement when the wind blows and soften the look. Of course, I would love some color, as well, but that's me. Hybiscus, maybe? What is your climate?

The stone at the transition corner of the wall and the terrace is very nice, and the pergola is lovely. You’ll have some nice evenings on your new terrace :)

I love it! Nice improvement. I'm all for low maintenance. You can always add colorful pots for softness .

What a transformation of what appears to be a difficult lot! Are you located in CA?

That picture looking at a slope from under a pergola -- that's your yard? If so I love what you did. I love how you confined your lawn to one simple rectangle, and I can see that whole slope full of grasses, flowers, etc to give living interest to your backyard. Great job!

Yes, the slope up to the horizontal fence is our property. I live in Southern California.

There is a lot of hardscape but can understand the need for low maintenance if the yard is especially large and you have ample space for foliage elsewhere.
