Solid questions! No need to fold or keep a laundry basket here and would opt for pantry storage. The hinges of the doors are on the right side. Brooms and such could be hung on the inside of the doors that close the space (not pictured). Thank you!

Try these ideas: hang the brooms up. Put a folding stool in between washer and dryer so you can unfold it quickly to get to the high shelves. Do a purge of the shelves if you have not done so recently. Look to see how an electrician could add a light over the washer and dryer, surface mounted, or just to the right of them high up on the wall, since you've already got electricity to the pull-chain fixture. Think about adding another shelf on the right side wall over the machine.
