It's hard to say without measurements, but it looks like extending the island will make it difficult to get into the fridge. You don't want to be backed into a countertop every time you need to open those doors.
If replacing the island would allow you to widen that working aisle, then go for it!

Hmmmm, that definitely a good consideration. How do you feel about the island stretching into the eat in kitchen area? Would it look out of place. I tried to find pictures of something comparable but nothing has come up? I'm going to attach a home that we were going to purchase that has a 10 foot island that I fell in love with. Of course the kitchen is bigger but would i be able to get away with something similar in this kitchen?

If you extend it towards the Eatin area your lighting will need to be recentered

About going for a very large kitchen island, which is extending into the eating area: it seems you cannot go beyond the fridge, or you will obstruct the way to the sliding doors. And beyond that the eating area doesn't seem too big either.

To me that prohibits further expansion.

Like TB mentioned: you must be able to access the fridge. Like I mentioned: there is a rule of 42 inches to be held in mind. It does seem to be possible to place the island a bit more away from the fridge. When that gives a problem with the floor, I'm sure a specialist has a beautiful solution for that too.

So you have to shift your electrical fittings to be in the vertical middle over the island. When you buy two separate new lightings, you can place them together so it looks like it is actually one with six lamps, if the space demands that. If you can place them a bit wider apart, I would do that. Then evenly space the elements. Perhaps the website I mentioned gives rules for that too?

That's disappointing, however I thank you for your advice. I love the house so much but the kitchen is so small. I guess I've gotten accustomed a fuller looking kitchen.

Your fridge being blocked with a too small aisle will drive you crazy. Leave it be for 6 months. You may decide to gut it all and not waste money on unworkable things that make it seem even smaller.

Well wait a bit before anything gets done but right now I can’t see that doing what you want to do will work without a real reconfiguring of the kitchen.

Agree you can extend the island to the edge of the fridge.

There appears to be an electrical outlet on the side of the island. That will need to be addressed if you replace the island base or add to it..

An alternate way to enlarge the island might be to just add a longer countertop with the overhang (that extends to the edge of the patio door side of the fridge) being supported by a pair of legs or, better yet, a shallow shelving/cabinet unit facing the dining area, creating a two sided "bar" with space beneath it for storing a pair of saddle bar stools between the existing island base and the support you choose for the longer countertop.

It's too soon... I would definitely move in and see what the space is like with your furnishings in there as opposed to the completely empty space it looks like now. Once you have lived with it for a while, then decide what , if anything , you may want to do.

It really is never a good idea to make immediate design decisions in a new home except maybe painting until you can let the house speak to you.
