Design Dilemma Before & After

From, worst to really bad. Options?

Brand new install. Steps, floors, skirting and trim. We hired a professional established remodeling /contractor company. I find it very upsetting that this is their solution to the initial mistake. Are we being unreasonable to expect a better outcome? This is why we hired a contractor, so we wouldn’t have to deal with poor work for subcontractors.

No you should not have to deal with this. It is shoddy workmanship. Have you talked with your contractor? Let him/her know that the work is substandard and needs to be repaired properly. Hopefully you haven't made the final payment yet. If not, let him/her know that you will pay in full when the work has been done properly. If you have paid in full and the contractor is refusing the rectify the error, file complaints with your local BBB, contractors state licensing board, and let your dissatisfaction be known on Yelp and other similar review boards.
