We have them in our bathrooms. One hung lower than the other to add interest to the wall.

Mine are spaced 9.5" apart from centerline to centerline. I find this distance to be pretty ideal and similar to how I have them spaced in the basement. I placed the first one as close to the tub/shower as possible but also made sure they would look kind of centered between the tile and the door when the bathroom door is open and rests against that wall. I had to place them kind of high in this bathroom due to a cast iron baseboard heating register along the bottom of the wall (didn't want the bottoms of my long robes hitting the baseboard). They are Ginger London Terrace robe hooks and work great as towel hooks. They're traditional looking and sort of don't match the rest of the bathroom but I like them and they're practical. My second choice was RH's chatham double robe hook.

I learned my lesson during our basement remodel that not all robe hooks are practical as towel hooks. I used Delta Trinsic robe hooks in the basement and they work great for robes but require practice learning how to put towels on so that they don't fall off. Even then, if you brush against the towels (and it's an extremely narrow bathroom), towels or the bathmat often fall off even when carefully placed on the hooks.

Here's the delta trinsic hooks which ARE NOT practical for towels.
