It can ball. The blooms are very long lasting on the bush, though, which seems condradictory. It's the last bush to bloom every spring, makes frequent blind and octopus growth, and is stingy of bloom after its first flush. Mine is 4yrs. old.

The flowers are extremely lovely and fragrant, so dealing with EA's faults is easier. Earth Angel's black spot freedom and winter hardiness to the tips is a tremendous asset to me.

Beautiful blooms! Mine are all potted and stored in the garage for the winter. I went crazy with Earth Angel rose trees this summer, got 6 of them. And got 10 from the bargain sale of bare root Earth Angel. They were sold out really fast within an hour. Love this rose!

Suebelle, your EA is the epitome of delicate beauty. This is a rose that takes my breath away. How I wish mine would bloom. I have two healthy, vigorous bushes. All I get from them is beautiful foliage. I will continue to try to figure out what they are lacking. Mine are also 4 years old. Moses, do you give EA any special care?

If it were not a new rose, I would think it is the one often painted by the old masters.

Chris - Mine will ball, but very very seldom. I agree with everything that Moses said about EA. My spring flush was unbelievable, but not many blooms after that. Definitely it does put out some octopus canes and therefore we prune it back pretty hard in February.

Flowersaremusic - I love your posting name. I must tell you that my Earth Angel took about 3 year to really start blooming heavily. If I can find my picture of the spring flush from this year, I will post it in this thread.

My EA is in full sun, gets plenty of water, and fertilized regularly. Really needs no fungicide spraying, just vulnerable tip growth is sprayed with Bayer Complete Insect Control, every 2 weeks for rose midge maggot. No other insect issues encountered compare to rose midge fly damage in my garden.. It's tip hardy w/o any winter protection.

I planted eight of these at my job last week -- bare-root from Palatine. If you're in the area, come down to Colonial Park in late Spring to see it. I have a new cell phone now, so lots of pics will be happening again -- though I'm not sure if I'll be fighting the system on this forum to post them here. I'll link them to "the other site" here when I do.

For now, here's one of some frost on a bloom of 'Mister Lincoln' from a few weeks ago, just after sunrise and before it melted away.

It was one of the last days to see any more flowers in the rose garden. In the meantime, I've been digging out pernicious weeds like a madman, doing a lot of thinning and clean-up on the old once-blooming shrubs that are very much asleep, and other things to get ready for Spring.

And I've also been doing a lot at the cemetery. Four new beds were started this year, and last year's beds got a total of about 2,000 bulbs planted in them in Autumn. For anyone on facebook, I posted some videos I took on my page. I made them to text to Anita Clevenger, since she was there in Spring, so when you hear me talking, it was to her. I'm about 1/3 through putting down coffee grounds in the last bed before it gets too cold, which will mean "The Huge Bed" will have to wait until later.

I'll update in Spring when the Narcissus and their companion bulbs are getting going.

Moses, I'm doing pretty much as you said - full sun, regular feeding, but maybe not regular enough. They'll get more fertilizer in 2020. No fungus or insect problems to speak of besides thrips. It's been more humid than normal the last couple years and I've had a little black spot, but not on EA. Love that she's so winter hardy! Now, if they'll just bloom. Maybe more fish and kelp fertilizer is called for. And, alfalfa.

Christopher, love your 'sugar' coated Mr. Lincoln. I'm looking forward to more photos from your new phone. I'm thinking about a new one, and photo capabilities are my main concern.

What a lovely rose! I'm working on my Roses Unlimited order, and was thinking of adding Earth Angel. But the stingy bloom and balling gives me pause. Does anybody know if it makes a difference if this rose is grown as a graft or own root?

Frances, I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but for what it's worth, the two healthy plants I have that don't bloom are both own root.

What a beautiful rose! Good thing I have no space left for any more roses!

I have an own root that I found at Home Depot last summer. It seems to bloom continuously in Zone 8. It got kind of a funny shape, tall and narrow . It hasn't balled. The blooms are gorgeous and being young I am looking forward to this next spring to watch her mature and develop

If it is even half as lovely as Sue Bell's I will be very pleased.

francis - I have 2 grafted on Fortuniana and 2 that are own root. One of the ones on Fortuniana is still in a pot and the other is planted in a rose bed. Both of the own root plants are still in 7 gal. pots.

Suebelle, these are some of the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever seen of Earth Angel! Your pictures literally made me gasp out loud. I had one, but gave it away because it wouldn’t bloom for me. Perhaps I should have been more patient. I’m regretting giving up on mine so soon, after seeing yours. Those pale globes are incredibly gorgeous.

suebella, how are the EA's doing on fortuniana.... I live in South Florida.... nematodes EVERYWHERE.... though I am amending and amending the soil. .... someday hope to have actual good soil instead of sand..... I have an own root EA in a pot. It just gave me a couple of blooms that I cut yesterday.... oh wow. the house smells good. I would like to have gotten this on fortuiana, but I read that people quit grafting it because it got too BIG and no flowers that way.... so I am asking someone who actually has the rose both ways how do you find it's growth and blooms own root vs fortuiiana grafted.

By the way I also have chili thrips in this area.... in fact the first documented CT's were found here in Palm Beach county. EA dose not seem to be a magnet for them.... she does get them, but not like Beverly who I also love.... but Beverly hangs out a neon sign that says "Chili Thips the Diner is Open"

Sharon - Yes, my Fortuniana EA is very big and tends to throw out some large canes, especially in the fall, not so much in the spring. I had hundreds of blooms on mine last spring, but remember my Fortuniana Earth Angel is three years old. My own root plants are no where near as large and do not get nearly as many blooms, but then again, they do not get as much sun as the grafted ones do. I have noticed that some nurseries are selling Earth Angel grafted plants that are not on Fortuniana. Maybe they would be more manageable. I find it interesting that most of you say that Earth Angel is so fragrant. I don’t smell much fragrance at all on mine, ever.

As far as the Chilli Thrips, we had an awful year this year with those terrible pests. You could even see where they were on the canes as well as the leaves. I have been growing roses for close to 40 years and Chilli Thrips have been the worst pest we have ever had.

Sharon - I also should mention that my husband prunes Earth Angel pretty hard in early February.

Thanks for the info suebelle..... yes this was my worst year for Chili Thrips for me I had cane damage too.... I am now trying the pepper approach.... there are 3 kind of peppers that you can grow that will host a mite that eats CT;s and other mites. I got my peppers from a guest speaker at our rose society. we were suppose to get the mites at our last meeting but UPS forgot to pickup so I haven't gotten my swiroskiis yet.... I do have tiny peppers though.... however, I won't know how well it really works until summer comes when the CT's are at their WORST. I plan on giving Beverly her own pepper plant....

I now understand how people can't smell certain roses...... to me EA is to die for.... however I can't smell Fragrant Cloud or Mister Lincoln.... Fragrant Cloud won at the our rose society show as most fragrant.... it is also my husband' favorite rose..... but to me I might as well smell a glass....

I love Earth Angel. She is pretty popular here this year, even when the blooms had aged..

I think I owe it to these little guys to get a few more Earth Angels this spring lol.
