Ok, I’m replying to my own post with more info. I believe I found the name of this: Tillandsia cyanea. Mine never turned pink. The fan stayed green until turning brown and crisping up. The foliage looks ok though (to me). It has been inside in indirect light but near a southwestern facing window. I have not watered through the center of its leaves. I watered via the soil, rarely. The temp in my house is kept between 67 and 70 via A/C and recently, heat. Maybe it hated the heat? Is there hope for this guy? Should I cut the dead fan off and hope it somehow prospers?

It probably bloomed before you got it. The foliage looks fine, so I'd just cut off the dead bloom spike at it's base, and it you should expect pups to start developing over the next few months. I grow mine in a greenhouse so it's a more humid environment than growing inside a house, but in general I use a more freely draining potting mix and keep the pot a bit smaller in proportion to the plant. These can be grown either potted or mounted, so think small and shallow root system and a need for a loose airy medium around the roots if grown potted. I water mine about once a week, but inside if it gets dry because of the heat being on you might want to also mist the foliage in between watering. I'd be careful about watering as frequently as I do in the potting mix you have it in now, though from the picture it looks like you're doing fine with what you've done so far. Also, these were renamed a few years ago so were Tillandsia cyanea, now Wallisia cyanea.
