My first bromeliad (fail)

I bought my first ever bromeliad from Lowe’s a few months ago. It is a nameless variety, but it had a “spike” which I believed would bloom. I potted it up and waited. And waited. It has been about 3 months (maybe more) and I’ve been walking by it waiting for a bloom.

Yesterday, I got down close to examine the “spike” and it was dry. Today it’s crunchy. I have googled but can’t find this specific issue. It never bloomed - no inflorescence whatsoever, it seemed to just stay greenish.

Maybe I didn’t water it enough. I have kept it relatively dry. I can’t figure out what to do except I believe I should remove the crispy dried-up “spike.”

Any ideas what went wrong and what I should do now? TIA.
