Workstation Sinks - The Galley vs. Everyone Else

Hi,

Currently working to design a new kitchen for a remodel. We have a 4 x 9 island and think that a 45-48 inch workstation sink would be awesome. I live in Chicago, Galley has a number of showrooms but the others, Ruvati/Kraus etc., not so much. I love The Galley, I do not love the price tag and in my mind, a sink is a sink is a sink as along as they don't rust/scratch easily. Anyone have thoughts?

In our 2017 remodel, we put in a Rachiele sink. It saves a ton of time on cleanup because the mess stays in the sink so the counter never gets dirty. In addition scratches and stains go away or become invisible in a short time. You can get whatever size of sink you want. Ours is 42". There is also stainless steel, but that has all the disadvantages of stainless steel. As for the Kohler sinks, the ones I've seen have such small bowls and colanders that it's hard to imagine how they would be useful. (Note: Rachiele invented the workstation sink).

Check out creatgoodsinks.com. Originally I was going to get one of their 4' sinks, but at the advice of folks here, I went with 2 sinks instead. I still got a smaller (28-29") create good sinks for my prep sink and like it. When I looked last year they were substantially cheaper than the Galley.

Do a search on this site for workstation sinks, there are quite a few threads over the years. There are many workstation sinks out there now, so choose according to your needs and how much you want to spend. I chose the Kohler Stages five years ago because I wanted the shelf which is the most useful for my prep style. The bowls and colanders are not why I purchased it. I use many store bought colanders that I have draining under my chopping board and add my large one across when needed. I like the shelf for containing my scraps and pushing prepped veggies into a sheet pan. I isolate meat prep on the shelf. I store nothing in the sink when not cooking but will add the walnut cutting board while entertaining. I use the shelf for my dish drainer during cleanup.

Only you can decide what will work best for you.

@Jerry Jorgenson I know you love your Rachielle sink but if you were going to get Stainless Steel with all its issues - is it still worth going with the expensive one such as Rachielle, Galley or Metal Haven if it will still scratch etc? I'm definitely going with SS

HU-426144764 -- This is a hard question to answer, mainly because there's no way I would ever go back to a stainless steel sink. (The same way I would never go back to a gas car after driving a Tesla.) My opinion is stainless steel sinks are just awful compared to copper. Stainless steel sinks have a lot in common with granite and faux-granite countertops. They look very nice when new, but once the countertops have a pot burn or other issue, they need to be replaced to not look terrible. Only get one if you never intend to use it. That said, the sinks I've seen in the store displays don't impress me with either design or quality of workmanship.

hmmm Jerry maybe it's your water...my SS three compartment sink bought off the rack from a big box store 20 years ago looks as bright and beautiful as the day I purchased it. They shine up so easily with a bit of the left over suds after washing dishes.
