Bathroom chair rail vs accent wall?

Hi there! I have some tile that I think looks great together. Marble for the floor and a gray wood-look plank tile for the walls. Originally I was thinking I would do an accent wall with the wood look tile. But now I’m wondering if it would be better as a chair rail? What do you recommend? And if a chair rail how would you finished your room? With wood crown molding? Or tile?

I’m attaching photos of the wood tile and the marble tile, and also the vanity we bought (hasn’t arrived yet. That is a sales listing picture)

I would put the wood-look planks, or the marble, on the floor. While the colors might look ok in real life, the styles are very different. I don't think they'll look good together.

You haven’t provided enough information for the pros on here to give you good advise. For example, what is the style of your house overall? This is a master bathroom? What does the bedroom look like? What are your favorite colors? I will say that wood-look anything is probably not a good design choice for a bathroom. Try to find a porcelain tile (like a 12x24) that is in a tone you like but not in the wood-look long plank shape. Marble is beautiful, but there are maintenance challenges. You might be able to find a porcelain tile that looks like marble. It’ll be easier to take care of. But of course lots of people have marble and they love it, so that’s definitely an OK option if you’re willing to put up with the maintenance issues.

tile as a chair rail?? huh?

and no, this tile belongs on the floor. period. would look silly as wainscot.

if you want to echo what's in the vanity picture, then do a shiplap. or do a longer subway tile if you want tile on the walls. But this faux-wood, short plank tile, would look horrible on a wall

those look like longer planks. maybe 42-48" or so.

the design is very modern. they did the entire wall (which looks to be 9-10' tall) very simple wood floating vanity and a solid color floor.

The wall is the star in that bathroom.

Your vanity and other tile is nothing like the one in the picture. the marble look tile is too classic looking for that rustic faux wood tile you picked. they don't work together. IMO

if you want a wood looking wall, then change your vanity and other tile, or, just do a white shiplap wall

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I’m am a little confused though, because I see many examples of wood look tile, both on floors and walls, and mixed with marble. I’ll share some that I’ve found. Btw this is a smallish half bath in our main floor. As for my style... well that’s tough because I like to mix traditional with rustic and modern (life would be so much easier if I could commit to just one!) but when I see the combination done well, I LOVE it

IMO you put wood look tiles where you would but real wood and in fact I think wood look tile is already a dated look you must have a fairly small bathroom if that vanity is all that will fit and it looks pretty traditional so I think small bathrooms are best done in simple tile 12 x24 on the floor and the shower walls a smaller tile for the shower floor and paint , tiny grout lines to match the tile and then add some color with art towels etc Too much going on gets tired very fast . The only bathrooms I like done over the top are PRs BTW mixing fake wood with marble IMO would never work well. And as I mentioned fake wood looks best where you would put real so honestly those pics posted some are really poorly used fake wood.

I’m so confused. I appreciate the input. But I see many examples of both wood-look tile and even giant marble tile on the wall. Why is it so crazy?

It’s not “crazy,” but putting fake wood on walls and inside showers is a trend that is on its way out already. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it. In theory, you can do anything you want. The pros on here are just giving you their design advice.

Also, most of the photos you posted are more contemporary. Your vanity is traditional. So you’ll need to decide which direction you want to go. Start by picking the one thing you love the best and chose the other elements around that. If your favorite thing is the vanity, change the other elements to suit it. If your favorite thing is the marble flooring, change the fake wood to just paint to go with that. And so on.

(Porcelain is easier to care for than marble).

A nice 12x24 porcelain tile on the floor and shower walls, with smaller shower floor tiles in the same or complimentary color would look clean and simple. If you still want the fake wood, put it on the floor, not the walls and not inside the shower. You can have all that with the traditional vanity.

And since this is a powder room, you could also jazz things up with some bold wall paper or bold art on the walls.

Oddly, I actually have real wood floors in my master bathroom because they were here when we moved in 20 years ago. The entire downstairs is wood: powder, kitchen, laundry, etc, etc. I like them so I can definitely understand wanting the wood look, just not on the walls.

IMO wood look tile is NOT dated. And, I think your inspiration pics are nice. I would not do the tile as a chair rail (wainscot). BTW, your little girl is adorable :-)

It's fine as long as you don't mind something that doesn't work with the marble look and don't mind something that's already dated!

but when I see the combination done well, I LOVE it

Too bad none of your examples are well done.

Because the two materials don't go together and the wood look on the walls doesn't work with your vanity. Winnow down to one look. Not a mesh-mash of ideas that don't work together.

IMO wood look tile is NOT dated.

We are all entitled to our opinions.

However, once you see a look in every HD, Lowes and Lumber Liquidator, it means the look is dated and on its way out.

Thanks Kim. I’m in total agreement that it’s a personal preference ultimately. But there are other things to consider such as resale value, or if I’m going to hate it in three years, Lol. It may seem like I’m just trying to get support, but I really do value people taking the time to share their expertise and I don’t take it lightly. That’s why I have stayed away from shiplap or going full on farmhouse or any of the other things that I actually do like but consider to be trends that I will probably hate in a couple years. I like quality with a touch of rustic charm. So I guess that’s what I was going for
