I'm pretty sure I've seen this same deal a couple years ago. So what happens if an engine kicks back while using this? While it may work it doesn't seem practical to me and more of an inconvenience.

Yes this is a more refined version of a unit i showed a while back.

I have had lots of units on trial with arborists, a guy in quebec using it for his snow blower, service shop engineers etc.

For the kick-back problem, the drill will usually pull through the kick-back - worst case is a momentary stall of the drill, then it continues to the next stroke.

I found that when my engines were cold they were the most difficult to start - so i would have used the unit to initially start the engines. Then the odd time when i emptied the grass box of the mower and thought 1 easy pull would get it running again, it wouldnt easily start - so in that instance i would have used my Pullstarter to give the mower a few decent pulls to get it going again. I guess it gave me the confidence that if i went to use one of my tools i would be able to get the tool started and the job done.

I know the tool is not for everyone and the cost may be prohibitive.

For me though i just wanted to continue usng the tools that like me have a few years under their belt, but still (hopefully) a few years ahead of them.

While dealing with a Neck Fusion’s restrictions and starting Lawn Equipment, I have used a Heavy duty drill and a socket on a Mower and Trimmer. Such As, a ½” bolt with a socket to fit the Flywheel nut or starter. Three flat spots ground on the Bolt’s treads to prevent slipping. This has worked well for Equipment that has not been used regular or required more torque than I felt I should give. Such as, I have a 23” Etc MTD, Self Propelled I use only as a “Backup” to collect leaves. After sitting a year with fresh fuel and Compression Release you can feel the Pull! My “Close Neighbors” gave me a Few Pulls as I help them with Maintenance when needed!

Fearing a Kick-Back, I initially welded heavy duty sewer cable to a threaded bolt to hold the socket. It twisted off w/o an effort. The solid bolt has worked well “being pushed off on start-up or priming for an easy hand starts. My Old School Edger that I donated came back to help me vs my string trimmers. It still started very Easy and I put the blower housing back on. My Wife gave it one easy pull and I was on my way Edging.

I have not found a way to use a drill to Simply Start-Up my 2 Poland Hedge Trimmer’s Season. I could not see a direct drive location to get help from a drill. The Universal Pull Start in this post looks good except for the “Price”! I feel there are cheaper units or will be soon. I have gone to Electric Chainsaws at home Only from 70’s Poland’s S-25. I have an 18” Poland Wild Thing/Husqvarna Donated for labor that Works well. I’ll save it for my planed “12 inch Dia Work “Limit”.

I had considered the same solution, but opted for not removing the cord assembly as mostly the engines will start easily enoughfor the remainder of the day once initially started - except of course whan i flooded the carb and then numerous pulls were required. One trialist said that for marketing I should be highlighting that the tool also gives users a reason to 'treat' themselves to a decent drill - I thought that may be stretching the advantage of the unit ..lol.

But seriously I didn't know i had a bad drill till I bought a good one - The Makita DHP 458 is a very good drill. The 481 is a brushless 'equivalent' an delivers even more power, but I will have to sell a few units before i can justify that purchase.

I find being as independent as you can makes these Units Priceless! Related to Yard and Firewood Work needs. I have found that temporary help is hard to schedule vs having a piece of equipment as a “Helping Hand”!
