Grass seeds cannot provide grass in an emergency. You should obtain grass seeds locally so that you get seed that is appropriate to your local conditions. You should plant them at a time appropriate to your climate, too. In the meantime, perhaps some cast concrete stepping stones can help you avoid the mud. Depending on where you live, you still might be able to buy rolls of grass sod for as close as you can get to having an instant lawn.

Packets of flower, fruit, vegetable, shrub and tree seeds can be bought for as little as $2 , or even 4 packets/$1 in late winter to midsummer at Dollar Tree stores, assuming you are in USA somewhere. Growing a garden from seeds is not something to undertake as an emergency action. Congrats on the new house-- perhaps you will get some garden supplies and equipment for Christmas or as house warming gifts. Those are the kinds of things I very much enjoy giving new home owners.

As an emergency stopgap til spring, can you contact tree companies and ask them to dump wood chips? Some people put signs out saying wood chips wanted. Spread these thickly on the muddy places. Take heart. Then take long walks in your. neighborhood snd see what groundcovers look best. Introduce yourself and ask for advice how to propagate some yourself. You may be the recipient of as many cuttings or divisions as you need. Give us more visual snd location information and we can recommend the plants for fastest free results. Our town has free wood chips mulch... does your town have that?

I agree with all the suggestions above, and in case you don't know about wood chips, I'll add a little explanation. Woods chips are fabulous at improving soil if they are kept on top of it as a mulch. But don't mix them down into the soil. Get wood chips as soon as possible and spread them out in a layer up to 4 or 6 inches thick. Then gradually as you get plants,, rake the chips aside and plant the plants in the gaps, then rake the wood chips back over the bare soil. When you do plant grass, rake the wood chips away entirely and put them around bigger plants.
