Even the best down draft is about 50% less efficient than a hood.

Are you redoing your kitchen? If so why do you have to leave it where it is?

Better to put that 3-5K pitiful ventilation to a better layout.

I replaced a gas range in my island, no other place for it. Bought a Kenmore Elite with downdraft. The most powerful I could buy, and I love it. Three powerful speeds. No hesitation, I’d do it again, it’s an excellent range top.

I cook a lot and chose to put my induction cooktop on the island 12 years ago. Still love that decision. We did run a heavy duty vent across the ceiling. However our ceiling is 9’ tall. A friend has used a downdraft for years and loves it. Go with what will make you enjoy your work space.
