I don't think there's a"one size fits all" answer to that. We're older, our adult kids are scattered across 3 states, and the grandkids are starting to scatter too, following educational and emploment opportunities. None of them live in cities/towns that we'd want to move to, and they're certainly not going to give up jobs, businesses and careers to move to us! I think the era of families sticking in one place for generations is over for many of us, so building homes with that concept in mind is something that just doesn't work well with mobile populations.
