I’d think about adding softness and texture, rugs would be great, upholstered bench at the end of the bed etc… - what about an armchair and ottoman and floor lamp in the corner rather than the coffee table and lamp

That looks like a cheerful space! Have you considered putting the table desk that is floating in the room by the computer area (so it’s like a peninsula off that niche? Then you could add a lounge chair by the door for reading, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. An upholstered bench at the end of the bed is a great idea. I'd have room for it. I was also thinking about an armchair by the coffee table, but in the spot where my laptop currently sits on the glass desk. I can forgo a dedicated laptop workspace in favor of a comfortable reading chair under the skylight. The laptop is portable and can be used at a table.Would a single rug in the middle be a good idea, or would two rugs be better – one under the table and one in front of the bed?

I would put the bed in the middle of the room with the pillows/head in line with the sky lites.

will the chest of drawers fit in one of the window wells? how about one of the bookcases in the other. Keep the door wall clear. Put one of the tables with a lamp at the end next to the fullview door, the other at the foot of the bed with your new bench.

Thank you for all the suggestions and great advice. The attic room, although rarely used, should be functional and cozy. I don't want a major investment. After bringing in an extra armchair from the ground floor (it's small enough to fit in the alcove under the skylight) and rearranging some furniture, I've come up with the second option and I'm wondering which one you like better. Also, should I cover the glass doors with a curtain, drape, or something like a pleated blind at night? I'm sending photos of the second option.

I'd like to add that the bed isn't a priority in this room. This is an entertainment room for my grandchildren, who sometimes come over to play, and then the free space in the middle is a priority for the youngest, who likes to run and play. The older ones play chess, and I don't want them hitting their heads walking under the sloping ceilings, so a clear walkway in the middle is a priority for me. I can lie there during the day, and then I can sit on the edge of the bed and have some headroom. I can also sit at the coffee table to select and leaf through a book from my bookshelf before carrying it downstairs to the living room. I hardly ever use my laptop (an old, spare one).

It may never feel cozy, but will be practical and your grandchildren’s changing needs will dictate what/where. Sounds like your needs are met and down the road if you are using a lot, you can always add more comfy seating. For your guests, more inviting bedding would be a nice addition.

First suggestion is to clearly decide on functions you want to accommodate in your attic space. Use that as a beginning point for dividing the room up into different areas. Since it is essentially one space I wouldn't treat finishes different in the different portions of the room. Instead, would focus on making the overall space a harmonious whole including an overall color scheme.

Thank you all for your advice. I also believe that if the room functionally meets my expectations, I shouldn't add anything other than one or two poufs. One pouf will be useful under the legs of the armchair, and next to the laptop, maybe a fitness ball instead of a pouf as a seat and equipment for the active grandson.

Made these images before hearing about the grandchildren (that explains the table in the middle of the room--chess). I was thinking just a comfortable guestroom and a reading area by the glass door for one or two. But here they are anyway, for what they're worth.

Visually, the challenge is the "everything at the bottom of the well" feel because all furnishings have to be low. The large blank "tent" of the ceiling is very dominant and very plain. Possibilities might include paint with a bit of sheen (satin?) for the ceiling. The increased reflectivity enhances the play of light and shadow on that surface and therefore adds some interest and depth (see the right-side slant). Or perhaps hang (velcro?) a lightweight complementary canvas or two on the slant, visually extending the art higher?

Now, where to play chess? Maybe leave the game table where you have it, put a rug under it and beanbag chairs in the corners (for softness and color), and call it done?

I like the chair and end table where you have them now, by the way. Maybe a second rug at that end of the room, leaving the middle area bare for play?

You're right. Color consistency will be key here, and then a neutral, soft rug like this can add a cozy touch to the room.

Is the particle board floor finished smooth? If not, then overlay vinyl plank floor, then add a rug. A bed against a wall with low slanted ceiling can literally be a pain - to make, to hit your head , etc. I suggest getting a fold-away frame and mattress. Or a twin bed with a roll-out twin underneath if you need that much sleeping space. I do like simplynatural’s suggestion for furnishing.

I think a second rug in the table area and a light curtain at the bottom of the glass door would add coziness.

@simplynatural - your suggestions with the addition of blue in the fabrics and the grey carpet seem very successful to me, because their cool shade balances the warm colours (beige, chocolate brown and orange).

I like the blue chairs. I just took my colors from the art (which may not actually be in the room; its angle makes me think it's been edited in). The rug I showed is actually blue, just lighter than the chairs and a bit grayed. (It's this one: https://www.rugs-direct.com/Details/Momeni-Mallorca-MRC02/141666). One of my goals was a room that looks warm and happy, especially if it's a play space for kids.

I agree that the glass door needs some covering for a sense of privacy at night, but perhaps something full-length (or that can be lowered to full-length) would add some of the needed height? The half-curtain emphasizes the "everything at the bottom" look. Maybe a bamboo or reed blind for texture?

A summary of our work together. The attic, which was only used occasionally, gained organized functional areas using equipment I already had at home, and in my opinion, it took on a more cozy atmosphere. Thank you.
