We wrap many beams - this one was done with distressed pine. Finished another last week painted white to match the rooms trim.

That looks really nice! This is in our kitchen too. We decided to go ahead and have them sheetrock it, just so it would be finished, and then we may decide to wrap it. I love the look!

The key to wrapping is to find the right "height" of wood to avoid sideways splices. 3/4" Pine comes in widths (or heights in this application...) of 11". If you have to go taller, you either have to place a horizontal splice, or switch to plywood. But plywood comes in 8' or 10' lengths, so then you have splices there....either way plan it out before purchasing anything! Painted sheetrock isn't a bad choice either! Best of luck.

I love the look of real wood beams and thought I would wood wrap our large lvl (seven boards wide and 15' long) and maybe add a couple more for symmetry. But reconsidered since our ceilings are only 8" tall and I didn't want to draw attention to the beam dissecting a portion of the hood chimney (plus most reasonably priced wraps are faux wood and I hate that). Decided on sheetrock wrap and paint. I honestly don't really notice it, much to my delight since I agonized over the decision so long. So it really depends on whether you want to emphasis it or try to camaflouge it, how high your ceilings are, if you can pull off an authentic look that matches your house, and if you can add more beams to make it contiguous with the adjacent space. Done well I think it could look great, but done poorly I think it could look tacky.

Forgot to post pic. It replaced an exterior wall supporting a large cement block second story so it was big and ugly. While noticable if pointed out, like I said, in the grand scheme of things I just no longer notice it all.

IMO you need to decide it this is afeature you want or not. Either decision works I certainly would not add fake beams in the space for sure . If it is the natural divider between rooms do wood or it is in a weird spot drywall it and make it disappear as much as possible.

We had a very similar situation and we sheetrocked and painted and that looked best.
