furniture help!

I have not been in love with my inherited dining room furniture pretty much forever. My son broke the glass on the hutch today (yay!!) So now I think I am going to toss it and am looking to paint the sideboard and buffet. Any thoughts on colors? I want to modernize it and since my floors are darkish I want to brighten it a bit more too. I had some stuff displayed in the hutch. Any idea for some way to display a few items as well?
