@maggieflan - I get it. I hate vinyl windows. I was simply saying that I prefer that style over a casement.

So, think about how you will dress the windows on the interior and the complications the different ones will cause. If the three single ones are crank style, that may inhibit the kind of window treatment you can use. I think the style you have is in keeping with your door, although I can't see all of it.

Older windows are usually single pane -- one layer of glass. Newer windows can have two thicknesses of glass or three -- double pane or triple pane. You seem to be asking should you use two windows in an opening or three?

Do see if you can find thicker windows -- double glass thickness of glass -- in the same slide/up/down style of the original windows for all the windows in your window grouping whether you use two or three.

New windows, properly sized and properly installed with appropriate weather stripping should resolve your problems with drafts.

Wider windows are heavier but often a two window set can be easier to decorate, especially if there is a post in the middle to be covered, in part, by a center drape panel intended to cover mostly the frame of the window and as little glass as possible.

Measure the height and width of the space for your windows and of each of the three individual windows in the groupings. You might even draw them, to scale, on graph paper to help you keep the measurements accurate. Then do some online research as to availability of stock (rather than custom) windows and pricing at the big box building supply stores and any local hardware stores. Ask, too, if they have contact info for local pros.

Get a local pro to give you estimates for both two wider windows and three narrower windows for each grouping of windows. The cost difference could well be a factor, especially if framing needs to be replaced and/or if additional framing is needed to change from three narrower windows to two wider ones..

There is a resale market for vintage/old single pane windows with wood frames -- being used for coffee tables and end tables and faux windows, etc. -- not so much for vinyl and/or aluminum, though. In the US? Your nearest Habitat for Humanity Restore Store would likely come pick up any you choose to donate.

@suezbell yes my intentions are to ask if people prefer a set of 3 windows together or a set of two windows together. Another option which we don’t want is a picture window which does not open & we want something that has the ability to open.

New replacement windows will fit exactly where existing window is. Not making it larger or smaller. I believe it is a standard size.

I’ve already got pricing & both options have two layers of thicknesses of glass. I just need to decide if I want 2 wider windows or 3 narrower windows to replace existing.

I will be donating old window to our local habitat for humanity :) they have been great to work with in regards to other donations we have made.

@decoenthusiaste front door will also be replaced. The one we have now is dented & jamb/ trim has seen better days. New door is next project after windows.

As for the window treatment we will be upgrading to cellular shades. They actually make one shade that can cover the entire width 94” across! So there will be no gaps.

From the outside, shown, three windows would look much better and stay closer to the original style of the building and the other buildings in the neighborhood, potentially helping protect the resale value of the home, so I'd probably go with three windows that open and close (and end up use five narrower drape panels rather than three wider ones).

Three makes the opening look taller which I think is better. Would all three operate?

You can really order a 94"w x 60"h double-casement window? You'd be cranking out a nearly 4'w x 5'h piece of glass into what looks like the street. That's huge.

With casements, be mindful of the prevailing wind direction. You don't want the cranked out window to block the prevailing wind. If the windows are on the side of the house that catches prevailing wind, be mindful of which direction the window cranks out. Also, if the house is oriented so that the windows catch prevailing wind, it doesn't do much good for the middle window in a 3 window bank to be operational. The middle window can be fixed glass.

Do a triple. That’s a bit too wide for a double, both in terms of form and function. And when you make inquiries, it will be helpful to use more commonly understood terms. “Triple pane” generally means three layers of glass. What you want is three windows. Get the best ones you can afford and buy from an established and reputable dealer. Engage an architect if you can find one to do a quick consult. It’s a big investment and a smart one!! This is cobnfusing double or triple paned means how many layers of glass make up the window not how many windows in a grouping . IMO the triple windows look better but a lot depends on the size of the space the two pictures you show are not the same size space and you do what works for your house not somebody elses.

Actually, this question is answered for you. You have to do a bank of three windows because of the size. Two side by side casements is not an option in that width.

If you're asking about how many layers of glass, it depends on your climate. If cold and a northern exposure, then 3 might be best on the north side.
